The Caribbean island of Martinique, which is an overseas region of France, offers a wide choice of lodging options, ranging from tiny bed and breakfasts to family-run guest houses to lavish beach resorts. The most luxurious hotels and resorts tend to occupy coveted beachfront locations and offer gourmet restaurants, spacious suites and villas, and pristine pools.

Cap Est Lagoon Resort and Spa

Cap Est Lagoon Resort and Spa earned four diamonds by AAA and was named "Martinique's Leading Resort" at both the 2008 and 2009 World Travel Awards. Its suites feature serene Asian-inspired decor complemented by bright tiles and fabrics and tropical hardwood accents. Luxury touches include plasma-screen televisions and spacious private terraces in all suites, and private plunge pools for executive and luxury suite guests. The resort hosts a water sports station offering catamaran trips, windsurfing, kayak rentals and skippered motorboats. It also offers two restaurants and a bar that opens onto a lagoon, as well as extensive rum and cigar menus.

Hotel Bakoua

Hotel Bakoua, located on the western coast of Martinique, is a former family home with well-preserved colonial architecture and private tropical gardens that lead to a white sand beach and turquoise cove. The hotel offers 139 guest rooms and suites within several Creole-style buildings. All the rooms have a private furnished balcony or terrace, and many of them offer views over the bay. The hotel hosts two restaurants: Chateaubriand, which offers Creole dishes and French Antilles music; and Sirene restaurant with terrace seating between the hotel pool and the beach. Guests enjoy complimentary use of kayaks and pedal boats, and have access to tennis courts and an outdoor pool.

Hotel La Bateliere

Hotel La Bateliere is located near the capital of Martinique, Fort-de-France, and caters to both business and leisure travelers with 193 guest rooms and suites. Its outdoor swimming pool overlooks a picturesque bay, and guests have direct access to a white sand beach. Every room offers views of the sea or gardens and comes with complimentary wireless Internet access. Upgraded superior and deluxe rooms have a private balcony and LCD-screen television; the suites offer romantic canopied beds and hand-crafted Creole furnishings. Entertainment and dining options include a piano bar and a poolside bar, and a gourmet restaurant serving an American-style breakfast buffet and international and Creole cuisines.

Diamant Beach

Diamant Beach is an intimate resort with 10 Creole-style villas situated along the beachfront opposite Diamond Rock, a natural landmark on the south coast of Martinique. The villas house a total of 49 apartment units for two to six guests; they are shaded by coconut palms and surrounded by flowering tropical trees. Each apartment has a furnished terrace, a kitchenette, dining area and living room. The resort's infinity-edged pool offers views of the sea and is used for aqua-aerobics sessions and introductory scuba classes, both of which are complimentary for guests. Other free activities include sea canoeing, windsurfing and ATV rentals.
