Luxurious Madagascar Hotels

by Joanne Thomas

Madagascar comprises the world's fourth-largest island and 220 much smaller islands and islets in the Indian Ocean. Its lodging options range from rustic camps to boutique beach hotels to upscale eco-resorts, with the majority located on the coast or on an island like Sainte Marie or Nosy Komba.

Anjajavy Hotel

The Anjajavy Hotel sits within a 988-acre nature reserve on Mozambique's western coast. Without access by road, guests reach the remote resort by private plane. The hotel's 25 rosewood guest villas, infinity-edge swimming pool and landscaped garden are all located on the beachfront. The villas offer sea-facing terraces and two floors -- one with the bedroom, living room and breakfast nook, and one with an additional "relaxation room." One of the attractions of the local area is tsingy, which are coral mounds sculpted over centuries by baobab roots and waves, as well as the sifaka lemurs, birds of paradise and chameleons that inhabit the reserve. Complimentary activities for hotel guests include sea kayaking, windsurfing and snorkeling.

Princesse Bora Lodge and Spa

Princesse Bora Lodge and Spa is located within a beachfront palm grove on Sainte Marie Island, which lies just off Madagascar's northeastern coast. The hotel offers guests day trips to its remote private beach, Coco Bay, which is only accessible by boat or four-wheel-drive vehicle. Guests enjoy complimentary use of bicycles, kayaks and snorkel gear for exploring the island's surrounding coral reefs. The lodge consists of private guest villas, each with a thatched roof, furnished patio and hammock. The 750-square-foot executive beach villas boast a stone-clad bathtub centerpiece and views of the lagoon directly from their canopied king beds.

Jardin Vanille

Jardin Vanille is an eco-resort just outside the traditional Malagasy village of Anjiabe on Nosy Komba, an island off northwestern Madagascar. Its eight guest bungalows, bar and restaurant are connected by suspended mangrove wood trails and surrounded by lush vegetation. The resort's hillside position offers panoramic views over the beach and sea. Each bungalow is equipped with fans and shaded by tropical foliage. The premier accommodation option is the Tsaramanga suite, which is located in a quiet spot overlooking the sea, just steps from a sandy beach. Jardin Vanille offers scuba diving trips in conjunction with the diving club of Nosy Komba, or guests can simply step into the waters off the property with a snorkel to see a colorful underwater world.

HSM Ile Sainte Marie

HSM Ile Sainte Marie is a chain of three distinctive hotels on Sainte Marie Island: the 48-room boutique-style Soanambo Hotel located between the sea and the island's main road; western-style luxury at Hotel Sainte Marie; and Masoandro Lodge with its eco-friendly bungalows overlooking a private cove. Guests at all of the HSM hotels have a choice of day trips, including a whale-watching safari, a boat trip to the remote northern coast of Sainte Marie, and cultural and historic tours of the island that may include a visit with a local artisan.
