Lodging in Destin Beach

by Wendy K. Leigh

The beaches of Destin unfurl like white ribbons along the coastline of Florida's Panhandle, in the Northwestern corner of the state. As part of the Emerald Coast, boat charters here are very popular, from deep sea fishing ventures to party boats and dolphin cruises. Deep sea, inshore and bottom fishing are all renowned, pulling from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as various freshwater rivers. Lodging opportunities run the gamut from high-rise condos to chain properties and luxurious resorts.

Mid-Range Hotels

While most of the Destin area is filled with large resorts and condominium properties, there is a Holiday Inn located directly on a private beach, allowing a more traditional hotel experience. They have a beachside pool and indoor atrium, and are located across the street from Big Kahuna's Water Park. They also have a children's activity program in the summer, and meeting rooms for the business traveler. The Inn on Destin Harbor is another option, with a beachfront harbor location, within walking distance of the charter fishing boats and dolphin cruises.

Condominium Rentals

As with most developed beach areas in the United States now, condominiums have sprung up all along the Florida Coast, including Destin Beach. The choices are abundant, with many of the same amenities and styles, featuring multistory buildings with swimming pools and up to three bedrooms each. The ResortQuest company has the largest number of rentals in the Destin Beach area, stretching all along the coast from downtown Destin to the Henderson State Park.

Bed-and-Breakfast Inn

Henderson State Park sits on the oceanfront right in the middle of Destin, with a bed-and-breakfast inn that overlooks 6,000 feet of pristine coastline. Rather than a tropical theme, the Henderson Park Inn draws instead on the Victorian era for it's decor, with a large veranda and private guestroom terraces. In this adults-only inn, there is complimentary beer and wine at sunset, as well other freebies like box lunches to take to the beach, candy bars, continental breakfast, and wine with grapes in your room when you arrive.

Golf and Beach Resort

The city of Destin stretches out to include a collection of smaller beaches that dot the coastline in and around coves and bluffs and parks. The developed areas are mostly individual communities with a mixture of permanent residents and vacationers. The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is one of the largest, with available rental accommodations that include villas, cottages, condominiums and an inn. Guests can choose from beachside, bayside, village or lakeside locations. The village offers a variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and wine bars. There is also a large Hilton Hotel property located on the grounds.
