Lodging at Darien Lake

by Meg Jernigan

Darien Lake, a theme park resort between Buffalo and Rochester, New York, is open from May through October. On-site lodging, tailored to families, ranges in price from moderate to expensive. Rates are most reasonable during the spring and autumn shoulder seasons. The best deals are at the campground, but expect to pay considerably more than you would at a state or private property.

Hotel

The Lodge on the Lake Hotel rents standard rooms with two queen-size beds and suites with various amenities. Suites have separate bedrooms, dining areas and fireplaces. Forts-O-Fun kids suites are rustic-themed rooms with separate bunk rooms, play areas, video game systems and flat-panel televisions. Every room has free Wi-Fi. Packages include admission to both Darien Lake Theme Park and SplashTown Water Park. Woody’s Café, open daily, serves casual fare. An outdoor swimming pool and kiddy pool are open seasonally.

Campground

The campground offers more than 600 campsites for RVs or tents. Fees for the sites vary according to the distance from the park entrance. Distances range from a 5 to a 15 minute walk. All of the sites have water and either 20-, 30- or 50-amp service, and some have full hookups. The campground is a short walk from Darien Square, an area of the park with restaurants, a laundromat, an arcade and general store. Modern bathhouses have hot showers and flush toilets. Mechanics are on hand for travelers in need of RV repairs. Campground packages include admission to Darien Lake Theme Park and SplashTown Water Park.

Cabins

Lakeside Brown Bear Cabins with bunk beds and loft sleeping areas are near the entrance to the park. The cabins sleep up to eight guests and have fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens and free Wi-Fi. Each has a porch, picnic table and fire ring. Guests must bring their own linens, bedding, pots and pans, and dishes. Pets are welcome in cabins but must remain leashed when they’re outside. Cabin rentals include admission to both theme parks.

RV Rentals

Thirty-five-foot RV rentals on Darien Lake sleep up to six and have full bathrooms with a shower. A small grassy area provides room to barbecue and a spot for a picnic table. One RV model has a slide-out, giving guests a little extra room. The other models have two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two twins. RV rentals, located near Darien Square, don’t include linens, bedding and kitchen ware. Pets are welcome and rentals include admission to the theme parks.
