Walt Disney's "The Little Mermaid" was released in 1989 and starred a redheaded mermaid named Ariel who finds human life intriguing. If your daughter is a fan of the movie, it may not come as any surprise when she wants a Little Mermaid-themed birthday party. Prepare a few party crafts for the guests to complete to take home as mementos of the party.
For easy introductory crafts and activities, print Little Mermaid coloring pages or coloring books. Place them all over a table. Give the guests crayons and markers to coloring the pictures. You can also print Little Mermaid puzzles, word searches and dot-to-dot sheets for the children to complete. Have each child write her name on her crafts so she can take them home.
The guests can make a salt dough starfish necklace as a party craft. Before the party starts, mix 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup salt in a bowl until it forms a ball. Roll the dough out and use a star-shaped cookie cutter to make several stars. Poke a hole in the top of each star using a toothpick and bake at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours. At the party, each girl can paint a star and sprinkle with glitter. Add braiding cord through the hole to create a necklace for the girls. The girls can also add seashells and pony beads to their necklace to give it the "under the sea" touch.
Party guests can make their own Little Mermaid cupcakes to enjoy at the party. Ice the cupcakes with blue frosting to indicate the ocean. Give each guest a cupcake and several icing gel pens or tube frosting pens. They can draw Sebastian the crab, Flounder the fish or Ariel the mermaid. The guests can also make sand dollar cookies by spreading white frosting on a cookie. They then lay five almond slivers in the shape of a flower on the frosting. Use chocolate sprinkles to resemble the holes found in sand dollars.
Seashells are available at most craft stores in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. The guests can use seashells to decorate photo frames and craft boxes. Give each party guest an inexpensive photo frame and have her glue seashells to the frame. For added decoration, have guests paint a small layer of glue on the frame and sprinkle with play sand. Guests can also decorate a craft box with seashells and sand to use as a jewelry box or for storage.
