Located on Lake Erie, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, is home to the large metropolitan area of Cleveland and all of its attractions. Because of its location, the county is home to a variety of activities for kids. Numerous museums, festivals and sporting events provide entertainment for families throughout the year.
Sporting Events
Cleveland is home to multiple professional sports teams. During the spring and summer, kids will enjoy attempting to catch fly balls and watch for home runs at an Indians baseball game. The Cleveland Browns play football throughout the fall and the Cavaliers round out the year with basketball in the winter months. Some kids may also enjoy taking in a hockey game while watching the Lake Erie Monsters, a team in the American Hockey League.
Museum Events
Local museums offer their own events throughout the year. The Children's Museum of Cleveland (clevelandchildrensmuseum.org) offers regular classes for children, including art and music classes and reading programs. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (clemetzoo.com) hosts special education programs throughout the year. For a unique experience, kids may enjoy one of the zoo's overnight programs, where they can spend the night at the zoo. The Cleveland Botanical Garden (cbgarden.org) is home to the Hershey Children's Garden and frequently offers special activities and events in the garden.
Fairs and Festivals
Since 1896, the Cuyahoga County Fair has been an annual event in August. This week-long fair offers music, performers, games and rides for kids. Farm animals and exhibits will also provide an educational experience for children. Bedford Heights is home to the annual Strawberry Festival, held in June. Visitors will enjoy strawberry desserts and a car show. Cleveland is home to the Italian American Summer Festival held in June at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. The three-day festival includes fireworks, a pasta-eating contest and traditional Italian food.
Other Events
The annual Cleveland National Air Show is held in September and includes performances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Kids will enjoy touring aircraft, meeting pilots and engaging in other flying-related activities. Brookstock is a one-day music and nature event sponsored by the Cleveland Metroparks. Visitors bring lawn chairs and sit on the grass to enjoy performances by local bands. Games, activities and kite flying are available during the event to help entertain kids.
