Kickboxing is a martial art and combat sport that combines elements of punching and kicking. While the martial art is considered a competitive sport and used in self-defense classes, kickboxing is also used in general fitness because of its cardiovascular benefits. Numerous kickboxing classes are located in Whatcom County, Washington, which is in the northern part of the state along the Canadian border.
Universal Solution Martial Arts Academy
Universal Solution Martial Arts Academy (USMAA) (usmaa.us) is in Bellington and offers a combination of Muay Thai/Kickboxing courses. Muay Thai is a type of martial art from Thailand that has similar principles to kickboxing and focuses on punching, kicking, and knee and elbow striking. As of June 2011, USMAA offers evening classes during the week. Women's kickboxing is also available at USMAA with classes designed specifically for women; private instruction is also available.
Total Confidence Martial Arts
Established in 1993, Total Confidence Martial Arts (tcma.biz) is in Bellington and offers Muay Thai/Kickboxing Instruction to help both men and women transform their bodies and get into shape. The goal of the MuayThai/Kickboxing courses is to teach individuals self-defense, physical fitness and self-confidence. Classes are available throughout the week, and members are split into skill levels. Opportunities are also available to join a fight team or receive private instruction.
West Coast Fight Club
Located in Ferndale, the West Coast Fight Club (wcfightclub.com) offers a weekly kickboxing class, as of June 2011. The club opened its doors in 2003 and focuses on preparing people to improve their strength, flexibility, agility, balance and cardiovascular endurance. Every January the club offers discounts on memberships.
Shayne Simpson's Pacific Northwest Karate Center
Shayne Simpson's Pacific Northwest Karate Center (pnwkaratecenter.com) is in Bellington and offers kickboxing classes for both teenagers and adults. Before beginning courses, clients receive two complimentary private lessons to learn the basics and prepare for group instruction. This center focuses on building strength, relieving stress, getting in shape, toning muscles, reducing fat and improving coordination. Instructors also teach clients about self-defense, nutrition and exercise science.
