Iowa City Motels

Located in central Iowa, Iowa City is home to the the University of Iowa and the Iowa Hawkeyes. While there are not that many motels in Iowa City, it does provide accommodations that are within walking distance from area attractions. Hotels located at the pedestrian mall are situated near bars, bookstores and eateries, while hotels near the interstate provide easy access to getting in and out of Iowa City.


The Sheraton Iowa City Hotel is on the pedestrian mall in the heart of Iowa City and within steps of local eateries such as Graze, which offers an extensive martini menu, and Formosa, a sushi restaurant -- both are a four-minute walk away. The 234 rooms offer Internet, sitting areas and complimentary newspapers. Rooms are pet-friendly and the hotel provides a dog bed upon request. An indoor swimming pool, laundry services and fitness center are located on the property. The hotel provides a complimentary breakfast in the lounge area. The smoke-free Hotel Vetro also is on the pedestrian mall. The 14-story hotel provides rooms with light-wood furnishings and views of Iowa City. Rooms offer kitchens with stainless steel appliances, a small seating area with a plasma TV and a small dining area just off the kitchen. A conference center, fitness center and restaurant are on the property. Located on the ground floor, Formosa prepares Asian dishes such as sushi and king crab. Hotel Vetro is a two-minute walk from the Englert Theater, where productions are held throughout the year.

Themed Motels

Open since 2002, the Alexis Park Inn and Suites is an aviation-themed accommodation that provides airplane rides for an additional fee and movie nights every Tuesday. The suite-style rooms are individually decorated in different time periods of aviation. Room amenities include Internet, whirlpool bathtubs and full kitchens. The motel provides movie rentals, a library of information on aviation, a laundry facility and barbecue grills. If you're traveling for a Hawkeye football or basketball game, the motel is within two miles of Kinnick Stadium and Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa River Motels

The Iowa House Hotel is connected to the Iowa Memorial Union ,where conferences, concerts and some student productions are held. You also will find coffee vendors and a student bookstore on the property. Rooms are small but provide amenities such as Internet access and views of the Iowa River; suites offer dining and living areas. On-site amenities include laundry services and a shuttle service around Iowa City. The River Room Cafe provides views of the river as you dine on sushi, pizza or grilled sandwiches. The hotel is within walking distance to university attractions such as the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History, a seven-minute walk away.

Near Interstate 80

The Quality Inn and Suites is just off Interstate 80, and this pet-friendly hotel offers 90 guest rooms with free Internet and weekly newspapers; suites include private balconies, microwaves and refrigerators. Amenities include a complimentary breakfast, meeting rooms and an indoor swimming pool. With its close proximity to the interstate, traffic can become congested in front of the hotel during and after home Saturday football games. Area attractions include the Finkbine Golf Course, five miles away, and the Old Capital Museum, three miles away. Also just off of I-80 on North Dodge Street, the Iowa City Travelodge is three miles from downtown attractions such as the boutique-style Dulcinea and the pita-style restaurant, Pita Pit. Amenities include indoor swimming pool, complimentary breakfast and fitness center. Pet-friendly guest rooms are decorated with floral decor and dried flowers and include free Internet and private balconies. Bob's Your Uncle is connected to the hotel and serves French dip, sliders and club sandwiches.
