If you want to move away from a traditional scrapbook album toward a more unconventional material, try manila folders. Manila folders can be manipulated to make pockets for souvenirs and journaling tags. Manila folders come in light colors, so they are easy to cover and embellish. Transforming a manila folder into a multipage album is an easy process that you can complete in less than an hour as a unique way to showcase your memories.

Items you will need

  • Scissors
  • Card stock
  • Glue stick
  • Paper trimmer
  • Envelopes

Standard Album

Step 1

Lay the file folder flat on your work surface with both sides out. Fold each side inward halfway so that the tabbed portions of the file folder almost touch each other.

Step 2

Cut card stock to the size of each tabbed portion of the folder. You will be covering the front of your manila folder scrapbook album. Use a glue stick to glue the card stock to the tabbed portions of the manila folder.

Step 3

Cut card stock to the size of the inside flaps. Glue the pieces of card stock to cover the inside flaps of the folder. Cover the back of the folder with card stock as well. The entire front and back of the manila folder should now be covered in card stock.

Step 4

Use a paper trimmer to cut two pieces of double-sided card stock to add to the album. These papers will provide additional pages for your folder album. Cut the card stock into pieces that are 11 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches.

Step 5

Fold the card stock down 1 inch at the edge of the center of the folder. Glue the 1-inch portion of the card stock to the folder. The rest of the card stock should be propped up to make another page. Repeat the process for the other edge of the center of the folder with the other piece of card stock.

Step 6

Glue small envelopes to the various pages of your album to hold souvenirs and journal notes. Add pictures and journal entries to your scrapbook pages.

Mini Album

Step 1

Open your file folder so that it is flat. Fold one-third of the manila folder inward widthwise. Crease the fold.

Step 2

Fold the manila folder in half lengthwise along the crease where you open the folder. Your folder should now measure about 9 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches.

Step 3

Open the folder, and fold down the left side of the folder until it reaches the center crease. Fold down the right side of the folder until it also reaches the center crease. Fold the folder one more time in half lengthwise at the center crease so that you are folding the two sides away from each other. Your folder should now be about 9 1/2 inches by 4 3/8-inches and should consist of four pages. The way the manila folder is folded allows the bottom portion of each scrapbook page to be used as a pocket.

Step 4

Tuck decorative papers inside the manila folder pockets. The papers should be slightly smaller than the size of each manila folder page.

Step 5

Adorn each page as desired, using photos, stickers, quotes or drawings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use decorative file folders in a variety of colors and patterns to avoid covering them with card stock.
