Instructions for Jumping on a Dirt Bike

by J. Johnson, Demand Media

A dirt bike is a versatile outdoor sport vehicle that can perform many stunts. Many drivers take their dirt bikes through courses that challenge a different aspect of driving, such as jumping. Jumps on a dirt bike can be exhilarating, but getting the height you need will likely be a challenge if you're new to dirt bike jumping. With some fundamental techniques and a lot of practice, you will eventually be able to execute a perfect jump nearly every time.

    Step 1

Spray paint a line across the jump, beginning at your starting position and following along the roadway. This gives you a guide to follow as you learn to jump. The line should follow the center of the roadway.

    Step 2

Ride toward the jump at a steady pace. Once you perfect your technique, you can start to ride faster.

    Step 3

Back off the throttle just as you reach the beginning of the up ramp.

    Step 4

Accelerate just before your dirt bike leaves the up ramp to help power your jump.

    Step 5

Accelerate again right before you land so that the dirt bike continues forward in a straight line, rather than veering off to the side.

    Step 6

Land with your legs strong and your elbows and wrists held straight. This helps absorb the impact without injury.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Always wear protective gear when performing stunts on a dirt bike.
