The North Fork of Long Island is less posh than its neighbor to the south, where the wealthy summer in the Hamptons. The area, known for its potato farms, is now home to more than 30 wineries. Inns and hotels at Long Island’s eastern end highlight local vineyards and promote the slow food movement on their menus.
By the Bluff
By the Bluff on the far eastern tip of the North Fork is just 200 feet from the beach. Irish-themed guest suites have private bathrooms, pillow top mattresses and high thread count linens. The ground floor suite has a rainfall shower, claw foot tub and French doors to a patio. Active duty military personnel receive a 30% discount on stays, and honeymooners enjoy champagne, chocolate and fresh flowers. A two-night stay is required on weekends. Three nights are required on holiday weekends.
The Pridwin Beach Hotel & Cottages
The Pridwin is a classic Shelter Island hotel, built in the 1920s and modernized over the course of the years. A small private beach provides access to fishing and canoeing. Fish served at the hotel, caught daily by the owner, is paired with local wines and produce. The hotel runs movies in the lounge for kids to watch while their parents dine. Cottages at the hotel have either water views or fireplaces, and standard hotel rooms have private baths. The Pridwin is open from May through October.
Heron Suites, located in Southold, offers one- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens, and has a marina and outdoor swimming pool. The property provides slips for transient boats and kayak rentals. Guests at the hotel receive passes to private Southold Beach and a complimentary wine tasting pass. Bay & Hearth Restaurant, with outside seating and bay views, serves North Fork wines and local seafood and produce. The full-service marina has 150 slips, a bait and tackle shop and a boat launch.
The Harborfront Inn, a luxury boutique hotel, is located in downtown Greenport steps from shopping, restaurants and the Shelter Island ferry. Thirty oversized guestrooms and five suites have upscale bathrooms with rain showers, body jets and Frette toiletries. The largest suite has a 1,000-square-foot private terrace and a king bedroom. Harborfront’s wine packages include accommodations and a car and driver for a trip to local wineries. Rooms on the side of the inn that face the adjacent post office are noisy when postal trucks are loaded in the morning.
