Early Family Life
Halle Mary Berry was born on Aug. 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, and has an older sister named Heidi. The daughter of an interracial couple, Berry faced prejudice at a young age. Her father, Jerome Berry, left the family in the 1970s. Following that, her mom, Judith Berry, relocated the girls to Bedford, Ohio. In high school, Halle Berry was the head cheerleader, class president and on the newspaper committee.
Modeling and Pageants
In the 1980s, Berry participated in numerous beauty pageants. She won the titles of Miss Teen Ohio and Miss Teen America. In 1985, Berry was first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant. During the late 1980s, she worked as a catalog model in New York City. She decided to focus on her modeling and acting career after attending community college briefly.
Berry has appeared in several television shows, starting with 12 episodes of "Living Dolls" in 1989. In the early 1990s, she appeared in episodes of "A Different World," "Amen" and "Knot's Landing." In 1993 she starred in the television miniseries "Queen." Berry appeared in a few television movies like "The Wedding" and "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" in the late 1990s.
