Jersey City, New Jersey, the county seat of Hudson County, New Jersey, stands directly across the Hudson River from New York City's lower Manhattan. So close that visitors often wonder whether the Statue of Liberty resides in New York or New Jersey (officially, the statue is under New York state's territorial jurisdiction). So close that when you consider Jersey City ice skating rinks, you're close enough to venture into New York City
Newport Skates (newportskates.com) is an outdoor ice skating rink, located at 95 River Drive along the city's Hudson River waterfront. At the time of this writing, the rink gives normal operating hours as 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and school holidays, those hours increase to 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.. The rink also has varying hours for holidays such as New Years Eve, New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Normal weekday admission is $6, along with $6 for skate rental and admission rises to $7, with the skate rental remaining $6, on holidays and weekends. A season pass is also available, currently for $120, as are group parties and exclusive rink rentals.
Pershing Field Ice Rink
Jersey City is also home to Pershing Field Ice Rink, located at Summit and Pershing. The facility also has a swimming pool. The ice rink is open to the public from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday; 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday; 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. and then again from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Friday. The rink also has different weekend hours for Saturday and Sunday. Adult residents of Jersey City pay $3 to enter the rink for each session and pay $2.50 for skate rentals. Non-resident adults pay a $5 admission fee, in addition to the $2.50 skate rental.
Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers
Just across the river between Manhattan and Jersey City, the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers (chelseapiers.com) is located at 23rd Street and the Hudson River. At the time of this writing, the facility offers general session skating hours on Monday and Friday, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:20 p.m.; and on Saturday and Sunday, from 12 p.m. to 3:50 p.m.. The general adult admission is $13.50, with skate rental for $8. The facility also offers programs in adult and youth hockey, skating school and figure skating. Children's birthday parties, as well as adult parties and events can also be held at the facility.
Of course, being so close to New York City affords Jersey City residents additional ice skating rinks just across the Hudson. One rink of particular note is the outdoor Trump Wollman Skating Rink (wollmanskatingrink.com), located in Central Park. There's also the Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center, located on 5th Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. The New York metropolitan area holds a plethora of ice skating rinks, both indoor and outdoor.
