Whitley Bay, a small seaside town on England's Northumberland Coast, has been a beloved destination for domestic tourists since Victorian times, and continues to welcome visitors from all over the world. The town's long-established tourist infrastructure includes ample lodging options, mostly in the form of bed and breakfasts and guest houses in converted residential properties. Its hotels tend to be on the small side, but some of the larger ones offer coveted beachfront locations.

Rex Hotel

The Rex Hotel directly overlooks the beach and sea of Whitley Bay and is close to the city center. All 70 guest rooms -- which are available as singles, twins, doubles, triples and family rooms -- have private bathrooms and a welcome hospitality tray, and some offer sea views. The hotel boasts three contemporary bars, which effects a lively party atmosphere late into the night. It also offers a restaurant with sea views; and room service is available. The front desk offers concierge services. Guests staying for business have access to a 150-person conference room with facilities.

The Avalon Hotel

The Avalon Hotel is a family-run establishment housed in a restored 19th-century townhome with views of the sea. It is centrally located, with ample shops, restaurants and public transport within walking distance. The Avalon Hotel caters to the niche market of motorcycle riders and cyclists with secure parking spaces and guided motorcycle tours of the Northumberland countryside available. Non-bikers are equally welcome, and the hotel offers three-person and four-person suites for families and groups. All room rates include a choice of full English or continental breakfast.

Marlborough Hotel

The Marlborough Hotel is located on the Central Promenade overlooking Whitley Bay's sandy beach. The hotel has been awarded four diamonds by both the AA (the British equivalent of AAA) and the English Tourism Council. Guest rooms range from budget-friendly, non-en suite rooms to premiere doubles and twins located at the front of the property. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel, and parking is complimentary. Guests enjoy a full English breakfast buffet daily. Newquay Lodge Hotel

The Newquay Lodge Hotel is located in the heart of town but still within walking distance from the beach. The 32 guest rooms are available with a choice of room-only or bed-and-breakfast rates. All the rooms have a shower, and some have a shower and bath. The hotel features its own fully licensed bar -- the Sands Bar and Lounge -- with contemporary decor. It is located above two bars and there are numerous pubs within walking distance, making it a fitting choice for the "hen" and "stag" (i.e. bachelor and bachelorette) parties and other celebrations for which Whitley Bay has become known.
