Hotels in Trelawny, Jamaica

by Joanne Thomas

Trelawny, a Parish in Northwest Jamaica, is an enticing destination with white sand beaches along its coast and lush inland mountains and valleys, yet it is considerably less developed than the nearby tourist hubs of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. While lodging options are somewhat limited, they represent a diverse selection that includes an all-inclusive beach resort, family-run guest houses and private vacation homes.

Breezes Resort and Spa

Breezes Resort and Spa, an all-inclusive beach resort, is designed for families with children of all ages. The property sits on a white sand beach and includes four swimming pools -- one with a 124-foot water slide, fountains and water spouts, and another with an 84-foot slide and a swim-up bar. The all-inclusive package covers unlimited meals, snacks and beverages, airport transfers, entertainment and a range of water sports that includes sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling. Guests can also try rock climbing and attend a circus workshop, which features trampoline, flying trapeze and juggling lessons. Accommodations at the 349-room resort consist of standard rooms, pool and garden cottages, and a presidential suite. All accommodations feature garden or mountain views and bright tropical decor.

Good Hope Country House

Good Hope Country House in Falmouth is an 18th-century mansion overlooking the Cockpit Mountains and the Queen of Spain Valley. The Martha Brae River flows through the 2,000-acre property, presenting opportunities for swimming and floating on inner tubes. Guests can stay in one of 10 bedrooms in the historic Great House, which also offers a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and tennis courts; or one of five rooms in the Coach House. Three private cottages are also available: the Counting House and Garden Cottage, which both have one bedroom; and the three-bedroom River Cottage with its own riverside swimming pool. The scenic estate features a picnic area by the river, horse stables, a pottery studio, a yoga room and a lunch terrace.

Pineapple Villa

Pineapple Villa, Pineapple Cottage and Duke's Hideaway -- three private vacation homes -- are located within the Silver Sands Estate resort community in Trelawny, within a short walk of the beach. All three homes are fully staffed. Pineapple Villa is the largest of the three with seven en-suite bedrooms, a living room and den, two verandas and a swimming pool. The upstairs wing includes two bedrooms and its own living room and patio with sea views. Most of the bedrooms have a king-size four-poster bed or sleigh bed. The smaller homes are Pineapple Cottage -- with two bedrooms, a terrace, hot tub and small plunge pool -- and Duke's Hideaway -- a three-bedroom villa boasting a beachfront setting, an outdoor dining deck and a plunge pool.

Retreat Guesthouse

The family-run Retreat Guesthouse in Falmouth takes its inspiration from the Southern plantation style encapsulated by the film "Gone With the Wind," with elegant, white-washed balconies and balustrades inside and out. The guesthouse offers two standard rooms and two suites, all with walk-in closets, a balcony and ocean views. The most spacious accommodations are the Grand Master Suite with a four-poster bed, and the all-white Honeymoon Suite, both of which offer a whirlpool tub. All guests enjoy access to an outdoor hot tub and a 600-square-foot sundeck. The retreat also features a bar, games room, television lounge and a romantic gazebo in the garden.
