Hotels in St Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

by Joanne Thomas

Although St Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, it is only 22.7 miles long and 8 miles at the widest with two main towns -- Christiansted and Frederiksted. A varied range of accommodations are available throughout the island, from campsites to private villa rentals to lavish beach resorts, but hotels in St Croix are predominantly located in and around Christiansted.

Tamarind Reef Hotel

Tamarind Reef Hotel sits directly on a white sand beach and is adjacent to the Green Cay Marina, where guests can arrange deep-sea fishing charters, sailing trips and boat trips to neighboring islets. Its 39 guest rooms all feature private patios facing the Caribbean Sea. The decor showcases bright, tropical patterns with custom bedding and drapes alongside natural wicker furnishings. Guests enjoy complimentary use of tennis courts, snorkeling gear and ocean kayaks, as well as access to a freshwater swimming pool overlooking the sea. The hotel hosts two restaurants: The Galleon with its fine cuisine, candlelit dinners and extensive wine list; and the casual Deep End Bar and Restaurant by the pool.

Company House Hotel

The Company House House occupies a former warehouse used by the Dutch East India Company in the early 1800s, retaining the colonial charm of its pastel-pink facade while offering contemporary comforts and amenities. The three-story, 35-room hotel features bright Caribbean decor throughout, and its guest rooms include flat-screen televisions with satellite channels, refrigerators and coffee-makers. On-site facilities include a freshwater swimming pool, a cobblestone terrace, a complimentary Internet station and a piano bar. The hotel's central location in Christiansted puts it in proximity to numerous restaurants and stores. Guests have a choice of room-only rates or seasonally available packages, which include scuba-diving packages for five or seven nights.

Holger Danske Hotel

The Holger Danske Hotel is on the boardwalk of Christiansted, a convenient location overlooking the Caribbean Sea and within walking distance of historic sites, dining and entertainment options and opportunities for water sports. The light, airy guest rooms all feature a patio or balcony, classically elegant furnishings, island-inspired artwork and either an in-room refrigerator or a kitchenette. In addition to its 42 guest rooms and suites, the hotel offers a harbor-side swimming pool and Angry Nates, a restaurant offering freshly caught seafood, burgers and a daily Happy Hour dramatically announced with cannon fire.

King Christian Hotel

The King Christian Hotel in Christiansted has welcomed visitors to St. Croix for more than 200 years, with its historic value amplified by a waterfront location adjacent to the Christiansted National Historic Site. One of its most attractive features is the private inner courtyard with a freshwater pool and sundeck with loungers and shaded seating. Guests also have access to a fitness center, a casual restaurant and a lobby lounge. The most spacious accommodation option is the two-bedroom VIP suite, which features private galleries with unmatched sea views. The hotel's on-site services include a Hertz car rental desk and a water sports activity center where guests can arrange boat trips to Buck Island, kayaking tours and scuba diving classes.
