Hotels on the NW Oregon Coast

by Joanne Thomas

The Northwest coast of Oregon is sparsely dotted with beachfront cities both large and small, most of which offer a range of lodging options for overnight visitors. The towns of Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach present some beachfront hotels that are notable for their family-friendly provisions, luxury guest room features such as fireplaces and balconies with ocean views and unmatched locations steps from the sand.

Inn at Cannon Beach

The Inn at Cannon Beach, one block from the ocean, consists of wooden mountain chalet-style buildings surrounding landscaped flower gardens with ponds and pathways. A gas fireplace and bright, sunny decor in every guest room creates a cozy ambiance. Complimentary provisions include fresh baked cookies, a DVD and book library, a daily newspaper and wireless Internet access. Room rates also include a daily continental breakfast. Family-friendly touches include welcome gifts and sand buckets for young guests and welcome treats for pets. A family fun package is also available. It includes a beach bonfire s'mores kit, salt water taffy, a local trail map, a frisbee and arts and crafts supplies.

The Ocean Lodge

The Ocean Lodge in Cannon Beach takes its inspiration from a beach resort of the 1940s. A sense of nostalgic charm is created by Adirondack chairs on decks overlooking Haystack Rock, a natural landmark of the coast, and muted plaids and flowery chintz fabrics in the guest rooms. Every guest room and suite has a fireplace and private furnished deck; some boast a whirlpool tub. Guests have access to the Ocean Lodge Library, which is filled with books and games for guests of all ages; and can also borrow DVDs free of charge. Homemade cookies and coffee are provided in the lobby 24-hours a day.

Cannery Pier Hotel

Cannery Pier Hotel occupies the former Union Fish Cannery in Astoria, an unmatched location reaching 600 feet out into the Columbia River. The history and Finnish heritage of Astoria are showcased throughout the hotel with features like an authentic Finnish sauna, the Picture Museum Walk and complimentary chauffeur services in 1930s and '40s automobiles. Guests may also use beach cruiser-style bicycles free of charge. Every guest room has a private balcony or deck with river views, a gas fireplace and personal wet bar. Luxurious touches include hardwood flooring, terry bathrobes and premium cable channels. One-bedroom corner suites feature a wrap-around viewing deck and a jetted tub. The penthouse suite, named the Pilot House, has full kitchen, living and dining rooms and two private viewing decks.

Best Western Ocean View Resort

The Best Western Ocean View Resort in Seaside is on the town's Promenade directly overlooking the ocean. An interesting local attraction is the official end of the Lewis and Clark Trail, which is four blocks from the hotel. All 107 guest rooms and suites include a microwave, mini-refrigerator, private balcony and complimentary wireless Internet access. Premier rooms and suites offer ocean views, fireplaces and jetted tubs, while budget-friendly rooms overlook the city and mountains. Guest facilities include an indoor swimming pool and spa, and Salvatore's Cafe and Pub, which offers Italian and American cuisine and a casual atmosphere.
