Hotels near the Zoo in Portland

by Laura Latzko

Started in 1887, the Oregon Zoo has more than 2,000 animals, including endangered species such as black rhinoceros and Amur leopards. People staying in hotels near the zoo are a short drive from Portland’s opera house, symphony orchestra, Native American art museum, forestry museum, craft museum, state park and nature sanctuary. Luxury hotels in the area, which are characteristic of hotels in downtown Portland, offer fine-dining restaurants, 24-hour fitness centers, gift shops or marketplaces, concierge services or indoor swimming pools.

Hotel Modera

The Hotel Modera features a homey atmosphere, with a courtyard dining space with fire pits and café tables, a walkway with modern lanterns, wooden floors in public spaces and guest rooms and swivel chairs and wraparound couches in the lounge area. The hotel sits about 2.6 miles from the zoo and within walking distance of the Portland Art Museum. The on-site Italian restaurant Nel Centro offers room service. The hotel provides passes to a nearby fitness club offering weightlifting equipment, saunas, steam rooms, personal trainers and an indoor pool. One of the hotel’s packages includes champagne and truffles. Guest rooms and suites come with down comforters, views of the on-site courtyard or Portland’s skyline, luxury bath products and desks with leather office chairs.

Hilton Portland and Executive Tower

Hilton Portland and Executive Tower is also found about 2.6 miles from the zoo and about 10 minutes from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, home to the USS Blueback submarine. A winding staircase in the lobby of the main building, an executive-level tower with a separate lobby and a foyer decorated with sculptures and chandeliers add to the luxury ambiance. An athletic club in the hotel’s main building offers a swimming pool, a sauna, steam rooms, personal trainers and massage treatments, and a fitness center in the executive tower features an indoor pool. The hotel has a currency exchange service for international guests. Executive-tower guest rooms and suites come with adult bathrobes and leather recliners, and rooms in the main building have luxury bathroom soaps, beds with down pillows and on-demand video games. An American-style restaurant in the main building offers pesto chicken sandwiches and grilled tenderloin, and the Tuscan-style restaurant in the executive-level tower serves ravioli dishes.

Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront

The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront is about 2.6 miles from the zoo and about three miles from the Pittock Mansion, an early-20th-century house. The hotel, which features views of the Willamette River, has spacious guest rooms and a colorful lobby lounge with modern chairs and a Starbucks cafe. An in-house American-style grill restaurant serves up omelets each morning, and a sports bar specializes in hamburgers. Guests in certain rooms are permitted entry into a lounge with a daily continental breakfast and a guest computer with high-speed Internet access. Presidential suites come with armchairs, bar areas with stools for up to four people, free bottled water and wooden dining-room tables, and other guest rooms and suites have different-sized pillows and down comforters. Some rooms also have exercise equipment. A fitness center with views of the indoor pool offers weights and exercise classes.

The Nines

Located about 2.7 miles from the zoo, The Nines hotel serves as a neighbor to Pioneer Courthouse Square, an area with live concerts and festivals. The hotel is at the site of the former headquarters of Meier & Frank, which was constructed in 1909. A foyer with pink curtains and colorful chairs; a reception space with modern sculptures and paintings and a lobby lounge with bucket chairs, multicolored rugs and a sectional leather sofa help to create an artistic and relaxed atmosphere inside the hotel. A 24-hour fitness center boasts free bottled water, earphones and magazines; it also offers personal trainers upon request. You have a choice of eating at a steakhouse restaurant with locally grown ingredients or an Asian-style restaurant with an assortment of sakes and sushi dishes. Guest rooms and suites come with paintings from local artists, DVD players, bathrobes and iPod docking stations. Guests in certain rooms have access to a lounge with a private bar.
