Hotels Near the Washington Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC

by Edwin Thomas

For visitors to Washington, DC, staying near the stadium of the Washington Nationals has certain advantages. Nationals Park, which opened in 2008, was the centerpiece of the urban renewal of the entire Navy Yard district, making some of the neighborhood's infrastructure among the newest in the city. The Navy Yard is the home of the National Museum of the US Navy and conveniently placed for sightseeing in Washington, DC. Finally, during the baseball season visitors close to Nationals Park are well-placed for taking in a game.

Nationals Park

An open air stadium with a capacity of 41,800, Nationals Stadium has only 3,300 seats that could be described as "cheap seats." However, it should be noted that most of the inexpensive, upper-deck seating that faces north has a view of the Capitol Dome, and that view is especially pleasant at sunset. Visitors to Washington, DC should take special note of the Ben's Chili Bowl stand among the stadium's food options. Ben's Chili Bowl is a DC institution located on 13th and U Street, NW, so sampling the fare at the stadium kills two birds with one stone.

Marriott Courtyard Capitol Hill/Navy Yard

The closest hotel to Nationals Park is the Marriott Courtyard, which is only one block from a Navy Yard metro station and about two blocks from the stadium. The hotel is also conveniently placed for those driving into Washington, DC, as it is just four blocks from a I-395/Southwest Freeway off-ramp and has on-site parking. Nearby dinner options outside of the hotel are limited, however. A Five Guys burger restaurant and a Starbucks are both within two blocks, but as the immediate neighborhood is deserted after office hours, these are usually not open in the evenings.

Best Western Capitol Skyline

This Best Western is situated about four blocks from Nationals Park. Built in the 1960s, according to Fodor's the hotel's heritage has boomeranged to make it a "cool retro" experience. The location is very convenient for drivers, but is not well-suited for pedestrians. The hotel is located on the west side of South Capitol Street, the area around the Best Western is somewhat seedy and isolated. Thankfully, the Capitol Skyline operates a free shuttle bus for sightseers.

The Carriage House

The Carriage House represents the third-closest set of accommodations from Nationals Park. This small bed and breakfast has tastefully appointed rooms with en suite bathrooms, plus a two-bedroom coach house available for rent to long-staying visitors. The location is inside the leafy residential neighborhood of Capitol Hill, roughly half a mile from National Park. An added plus is that the Carriage House is across from Garfield Park, a popular-but-quiet neighborhood green space.
