Hotels Near Path Train in Newark, New Jersey

by Gigi Starr

For the budget traveler, Newark, New Jersey's downtown area is a decent, low-cost alternative to staying in New York City. A 30-minute train ride on the PATH subway system comfortably transports passengers to several stops in Greenwich Village and along Sixth Avenue in New York City. Penn Station, Newark's only PATH stop, lies close to several moderately priced hotels that suit a wide range of price points. Suitable for both vacation and business travelers, some hotels are even within walking distance of the PATH stop.

Hilton Newark Penn Station

The Hilton Newark Penn Station is a long-standing landmark for area residents and Penn Station commuters. If you're not a fan of cold-weather walks, this is the hotel to book; the Hilton Newark Penn Station connects to the station proper via a covered indoor walking bridge, and is directly across the drop-off plaza from the station. Centrally located in the city, this is a good pick for business travelers. Each room has a work desk, and the hotel also furnishes a business center. Rooms range in size from two double beds to a king suite with a parlor seating area, and include access to the hotel's complimentary fitness studio.

Hampton Inn and Suites Newark Riverwalk

Located off of Route 21, Hampton Inn Newark Riverwalk sits next to the Passaic River and the neighboring city of Harrison. This hotel is also within walking distance of the Newark Bears arena and the downtown business district. The Hampton Inn and Suites offers guests a choice between a traditional room or suite; suites and study rooms have a sofabed in the sitting area and a dining table. Among other amenities, each room comes equipped with a fridge, complimentary Internet and microwave. If you don't feel like cooking, the hotel is near several fast-food restaurants, a diner and a supermarket. To reach the PATH station, use the local bus service to ride down to the Newark PATH stop, or go to the equally close Harrison stop on the same PATH line.

Best Western Robert Treat Hotel

The Robert Treat Hotel is a Newark landmark open for more than 100 years of service. Host to lots of city social events, the Robert Treat Hotel is known to both locals and visitors alike. With the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, or NJPAC, located right across the street, it's also a popular hotel for theater lovers. The PATH station is only a couple of blocks away by foot along major roads, and is reachable at all times of the day or night. The hotel's 170 guest rooms range in size from a standard room to a suite that includes a family-sized dining room area. For business travelers, the hotel also furnishes business services and complimentary Internet access.

Comfort Suites Newark

Comfort Suites Newark sits right on Route 21 North, and is close to several local shops. While no bus runs directly in front of the hotel, the PATH station is only a five-minute taxi or car ride away. The hotel's 86 guest rooms include a complimentary hot breakfast buffet, free Internet, microwave and free parking. You'll need a car to get to most activities, including restaurants and tourist attractions. The hotel is up to date, in a safe area and affordable when compared to stays in Manhattan.
