Northampton, home to Smith College, lies in western Massachusetts and is part of the five-college area of Smith, Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. As a small college town, Northampton does not have many hotels, but there are several that serve the area.
Lewis Wiggins built the historic Hotel Northampton in 1927. Since then, political figures and celebrities have graced the hotel, including Calvin Coolidge, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Jenny Lind visited and declared the town to be the "Paradise of America," a description that became the town nickname. The hotel has a conservatory and 106 luxury rooms and suites. Dine at either of the two in-house restaurants, the Coolidge Park Cafe or Wiggins Tavern. The Coolidge Park Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the tavern is only open evenings.
Clarion Hotel and Conference Center
The heated indoor swimming pool at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center lies underneath a glass dome. Many of the rooms open onto this pool area or have a balcony overlooking it. The Clarion also has an outdoor swimming pool and a child's pool. You can enjoy a game of tennis, volleyball or horseshoes on site. Drop by Roberto's Restaurant for pizza or pasta, or try Eastside Grill if you're in the mood for steak. Eastside also serves specialty dishes such as chicken with pignoli crust and jambalaya. Sylvester's Restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, with brunch on weekends.
Quality Inn and Suites
The Quality Inn and Suites lies a mile from Smith College and offers rooms and suites. Some of the units provide kitchen facilities, and the special king suite offers an in-room jetted hot tub. The hotel has a heated swimming pool and workout room. Visit Haymarket Cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and sample its vegetarian menu choices that include a Gruyere, leek and cream tart, or a linguini dish made with Haymarket's hand-made pasta. If you like Thai food, try Siam Square. Dishes include dancing squid, pad thai, crispy duck and garlic shrimp.
