Hotels Near Howe Caverns in New York

An eclectic selection of hotels and motels less than 20 miles from Howe Caverns provides low to mid-range accommodations. Rooms are scarce at the few hotels near Howe Caverns during events at the local university or at the nearby Baseball Hall of Fame. Rates are lower during the mid-October through April off-season.

The American Hotel

The American Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located in Sharon Springs about 16 miles northwest of Howe Caverns. Updates completed in 2001 won the hotel the Preservation League of New York’s 2002 “Excellence in Historic Preservation” award. The hotel’s upscale dining room serves locally sourced meats and produce. Nine double guestrooms overlook the front porch or balcony. One of the American Hotel’s package deals includes a tour of the Ommegang Brewery, where Belgian ales are the specialty.

Howe Caverns Motel

Howe Caverns Motel, operated by the owners of Howe Caverns, is located across from the attraction's visitor’s center. The motel and the attractions are open year round. Every room at the moderately priced property has unobstructed mountain or valley views. The nonsmoking motel does not allow pets, and a minimum stay may be required on holiday weekends or during special events. Package deals include accommodations, a cave tour and free souvenirs. Package add-ons include a meal at a historic mansion, a hike up a nearby mountain and an autumn trip to a pumpkin patch.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Schoharie

Holiday Inn Express, about seven miles east of Howe Caverns, is completely handicap accessible. Located just off Interstate 88, rooms on the highway side of the hotel can be noisy, but rooms on the other side of the hotel have Schoharie Valley views. Accommodations are pricey during special events at the nearby Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Holiday Inn Express Schoharie doesn’t have a swimming pool, but a small arcade is equipped with video games.

Accommodations in Cobleskill

Cobleskill is about six miles west of Howe Caverns. The Best Western Inn bills itself as a family-friendly hotel. Some of the rooms face the indoor pool, and the hotel’s bowling alley is open seven days a week. The no-frills Super 8, which fills up quickly when there are events at nearby SUNY Cobleskill, is within walking distance of shopping and restaurants. All of the units at the Gables Bed & Breakfast Inn have private baths. The property consists of two Victorian homes in downtown Cobleskill.
