Donnington is a village on the edge of the town of Telford, one of the largest communities in the rural county of Shropshire in the English Midlands. One of Shropshire’s main attractions is the Ironbridge Gorge, 10 miles from Donnington and a key center in the birth of the Industrial Revolution. A series of museums there celebrates the area’s long-gone industrial heritage. Donnington has a couple of hotels, with other lodging options near the village.

The White House Hotel

Set on the edge of Donnington and surrounded by two acres of gardens, the White House Hotel has 32 rooms. The on-site Oscar’s Restaurant serves British and European dishes, while the bar offers a selection of traditionally brewed English ales and a pub menu. Dining alternatives within a 15-minute drive include the Peppers Balti Restaurant, which serves Indian food, and Jenkos Mongolian Barbecue, set by the Compasses Inn in a log cabin. Just over a mile from the White House Hotel, the Shropshire Golf Centre welcomes visitors to its three nine-hole courses.

Premier Inn Telford North

The Premier Inn Telford North in Donnington is a 15-minute drive from Telford’s center. The hotel is part of a British national chain, which offers low prices for simple but comfortable accommodations. The on-site Table Table Restaurant serves English and international dishes. Nearby dining choices include the Ho Mei Village, which serves Cantonese dishes, and the Dhaka, which offers Indian and Bangladeshi dishes. Attractions at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom, two miles from the hotel, include the usual farm animals plus a selection of other fauna including parrots, snakes and meerkats.

Hadley Park House Hotel

Just over two miles from Donnington, Hadley Park House Hotel’s main building is a fine, 18th-century country house built in Georgian style. This hotel has 22 bedrooms and is surrounded by landscaped gardens. The on-site restaurant offers a seasonal menu featuring modern British dishes including Gressingham duck breast and roast venison loin. To experience a traditional English village, visit Much Wenlock, a 25-minute drive from the hotel. Find out about the history of the village’s half-timbered houses, some dating back to medieval times, at the Much Wenlock Museum.

The Swan Hotel, Wellington

The family-run Swan Hotel, Wellington is set in a modern building constructed in English village inn style in the town of Wellington, a 15-minute drive from Donnington and 10 minutes from central Telford. The hotel’s on-site restaurant serves a traditional English menu, which includes all-day breakfast. The Old Orleton Inn, set in a 17th-century coaching inn, just over a mile from the Swan, offers a contemporary British menu with dishes like Devon Bay mullet and grey partridge. The Wrekin Golf Club’s 18-hole course is a few minutes’ drive from the hotel, and the club welcomes visiting players.
