The small hamlet of Davenport in the scenic English county of Cheshire has no hotels within the town limits, but accommodations are found in the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. Many hotels in the area are set in period buildings, some dating back as far as the 16th century. Davenport is about one hours’ drive north of England’s second city, Birmingham. The county of Cheshire includes the rugged Peak District and the county seat, Chester, with its cathedral dating from the 11th century.
The Bears Head in Brereton
Set in a coaching inn originally built in 1625 and added to during the 18th century, the Bears Head in Brereton is a five-minute drive from the village of Davenport. The hotel is built in traditional English style with white plasterwork and black timbering, and its pub has an open log fire, timber beams and a beer garden. The pub menu includes English favorites like Lancashire hotpot and fish and chips plus a selection of international dishes. The Brereton Heath Nature Reserve, which includes a 15-acre lake, is a few minutes’ drive from the Bears Head.
The Lion and Swan Congleton
A 10-minute drive from Davenport, the Lion and Swan is set in the town of Congleton. The building dates from the 16th century and was expanded in the 18th century with the advent of regular stagecoach services. According to local legend, a ghostly young lady wearing only clogs visits the hotel at every new moon. The on-site Bear Town Grill serves classic English dishes in a room with an original, ornately carved stone fireplace. The Lion and Swan is a five-minute walk from Congleton Museum, which has local history exhibits.
The Alexandra Court Hotel
Located in Congleton and four miles from Davenport, the Alexandra Court Hotel is housed in a fine Victorian house surrounded by well-tended gardens. The on-site Red Room Restaurant serves an English and international menu in a room overlooking the gardens. The hotel is a 10-minute walk from the 35 green acres of Astbury Mere Country Park, which includes a network of hiking and biking trails, and a lake offering windsurfing.
Chimney House Hotel
Ten minutes by car from Davenport, the Chimney House Hotel occupies a half-timbered country house in Tudor style, set on eight acres of grounds. The hotel’s Patio Restaurant serves a brasserie menu, and the bar offers sandwiches and light meals. The hotel is a five-minute drive from the town of Sandwich where eateries include the Orient, which serves Chinese and Thai food, and La Casa Vecchia, an Italian restaurant. Sandbach Golf Club’s 18-hole course, which welcomes visiting players, is a five-minute drive from the Chimney House and the club.
