by Ken Macdonald Google

The market town of Horncastle is in the English county of Lincolnshire, some 20 miles from the county seat, Lincoln, which features a well-preserved Norman castle. The seaside resort of Skegness, with long, sandy beaches, is a 30-minute drive east of Horncastle. The town is a center for the antiques trade, and an outdoor market is held every Thursday and Saturday, selling everything from lingerie to locally made cheese. A small selection of hotels and other accommodations exist in Horncastle and the surrounding countryside.

The Bull Hotel

Dating back to the 17th century, the family-run Bull Hotel is set in the heart of Horncastle. The on-site Cromwell’s Restaurant serves English favorites like fish and chips and Lincolnshire sausage and mash. The courtyard terrace is available for summer al fresco drinking and dining. The pub-style bar has an open fire and features live music on Sunday evenings. The Bull also runs medieval banquet evenings with an authentic menu and waiting staff in period costume.

Best Western Admiral Rodney Hotel

Housed in a former coaching inn, the Best Western Admiral Rodney Hotel is in central Horncastle. The hotel’s Courtyard Restaurant, which opens on to a conservatory terrace, offers an international, a la carte menu, while the Rodney Bar features a selection of traditionally brewed ales. A five-minute drive from the Admiral Rodney, Horncastle Golf Club’s 18-hole course is open to visitors seven days a week. Tattershall Castle, built in the 1440s, is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. Climb the 130-foot-tall tower for views across the Lincolnshire countryside.

Mizpah Villa Bed and Breakfast

Just on the edge of Horncastle, the Mizpah Villa Bed and Breakfast occupies a modern family home. The owners serve a cooked breakfast each morning, and on-site parking is available. Dining options within a 15-minute walk include Indian food at the Agra Tandoori and classic English food at Shakesby’s Restaurant. Horncastle’s public indoor swimming pool, which includes a fitness room, is a five-minute drive from Mizpah Villa. The 220 acres of Snipe Dales Country Park are five miles away.

The Petwood Hotel

A 15-minute drive from Horncastle, the Petwood Hotel is housed in a half-timbered country mansion built in the early 20th century and surrounded by formal gardens. The hotel’s beauty salon offers massages, facials and manicures. The hotel specializes in golfing vacations, organized with the nearby Woodhall Spa Golf Club, which features two 18-hole courses. Petwood’s restaurant serves a modern British menu in a smart but casual ambiance. During World War II, the hotel provided lodging for Royal Air Force personnel, and the Squadron Bar is dedicated to their memory.
