Franklin County, North Carolina, about 30 miles from Raleigh Durham International Airport, is an area of rolling hills, creeks and rocky outcroppings. Louisburg, the county seat, is home to Louisburg College, a small university with roots dating to 1786. Despite the county’s proximity to big cities and the presence of a college, only a limited number of lodging choices exist in the area. Rooms are available in budget motels and a single bed and breakfast.
The Barrow-Wilson House
The Barrow-Wilson House, built around 1890, is in Louisburg near the Tar River. A wide rocking chair front porch welcomes visitors to the first floor, where guests share a dining room, small library and common room. The house has four bedrooms, two on the second floor. Gourmet breakfast is served daily, and an afternoon reception features wine or homemade lemonade. Package deals at Barrow-Wilson House include a variety of activities such as skydiving, buggy rides or horseback riding lessons.
Budget Inn Franklinton
Franklinton holds the dubious distinction of being the birthplace of comic Soupy Sales and the site of the automobile crash that killed heavyweight champion boxer Jack Johnson in 1946. Budget Inn Franklinton is an economical lodging choice offering free WiFi, parking for large trucks or RVs, and no-frills rooms with exterior doors. The inn’s location on Highway 1 provides easy access to Raleigh, about 25 miles to the south. Budget Inn accepts pets but does not allow smoking.
Days Inn Louisburg
Days Inn Louisburg is one of only two hotel properties in Louisburg. Rates are elevated for a budget motel, probably because of the lack of competition. Days Inn has an outdoor swimming pool and offers free Internet access in the rooms and at a computer terminal in the lobby. Pastries and cereal are available in the morning. A nearby Waffle House offers other breakfast options.
Economy Inn Louisburg
Economy Inn Louisburg is the other hotel property in Louisburg. The no-frills motor court offers standard rooms with free high-speed Internet access, microwave ovens and mini-fridges. Located across the street from the Shannon Village Shopping Center and a few blocks from Louisburg College, the motel is a short walk from fast food restaurants, a coffee shop and a sports bar. Franklin Regional Medical Center is less than half a mile away. Smoking is allowed in some rooms, but pets are not welcome.
