Whether you love Paris in the spring, summer, fall or winter, the one thing you may not like about the fabled City of Light is the high cost of a good hotel room. If, however, you venture outside the city limits there are great accommodations at reasonable prices. Whether you seek a simple traveler-style room, efficiency studio or elegant hideaway, there are a few exceptional hotels that offer both bargain rates and close proximity to Paris.

Trianon Palace Versailles

The Trianon Palace Versailles is about 10 miles west of Paris and just steps from the grounds of Louis XIV's gilded Chateau de Versailles. The spa is hosted by the famed perfume company of Guerlain, the restaurant was designed by TV chef Gordon Ramsay (his first restaurant in France), and the gardens are an ambitious rival to something the Sun King himself might have envisioned. Even though it is classified as a luxury hotel, the Trianon is a great place to bring kids — they stay free in your room — as there are lots of hiking, biking and running trails nearby, and the indoor pool is spectacular.

Grand Hotel Sénia in Orly

The Grand Hotel Sénia is designed for the traveler — business or pleasure — who is seeking minimum frills and maximum convenience and efficiency. Ten miles from the heart of Paris and a short shuttle ride to Orly airport, this hotel has a wide variety of business services, a pretty good dinner buffet, nice wine list and room service. What it lacks in glamour, it makes up for in service and accessibility.

Aigle Noir Hotel in Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau is almost 35 miles from Paris, but the Aigle Noir Hotel is worth the trip. This romantic hideaway features fantastic murals throughout the public areas and a history that dates back to 1874. Across from the Fontainebleau Palace Gardens, the hotel offers many of the rooms with garden views and each is differently decorated, although all in a predominately French Empire theme. The large and ornate public drawing room is a special treat, with an honor bar and a variety of books and newspapers to read by the imposing fireplace. Several rock-climbing venues are in the area, and no matter your age, you will get a thrill from the two-story carousel in the middle of town.

Hotel Résidence Montrouge

Just a half mile from the Paris city limits, Hotel Résidence offers rooms that resemble tiny Parisian apartments and at an extremely reasonable rate. The rooms have miniature kitchens that make an extended stay much more convenient than a standard room, and the hotel is situated on a pretty little square surrounded by shops and restaurants. Nearby bus and Metro stations make a trip to Paris a breeze.
