Hotels in Berrima, Australia

by Joanne Thomas

Berrima, a historic village in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, attracts visitors with its well-preserved 19th-century buildings and the ambiance of a once-thriving early European settlement. Berrima offers a handful of lodging options for overnight visitors, including a historic landmark inn, luxurious guest houses and a countryside motel.

Surveyor General Inn

Constructed by convicts from sandstone, timber beams and shingles in 1834, the Surveyor General Inn boasts the title "Australia's Oldest Continuously Licensed Inn." Its cellar was originally used as the county jail and still features barred windows. The historic property consists of colonial-style accommodations, bars, a bistro and a beer garden. The four guest rooms, along with a shared bathroom, occupy the upstairs of the historic building. They feature unfussy Victorian-style decor with iron beds and all-white linens. The Bushrangers Bistro is housed in a modern extension. It offers an extensive cellar of wines produced in the local region, an a la carte menu and a barbecue where guests prepare their own steaks. The Surveyor General Inn won the Australian Hotel Association's "Award for Excellence - Best Heritage Hotel" in 2007.

The Gardener's Retreat offers a wood-burning fireplace in the living room and a private veranda. Grayswood, the suite in the main house, opens onto a private garden room; it features wooden shutters and wrought iron railings along antique French windows. All guests have access to a kitchenette and a cozy lounge with a fireplace and library of books, movies, music and magazines.
