Hotels that allow pets in Cambridge, Massachusetts, near Harvard University are generally upscale properties with more amenities than standard motels. Some allow pets for an additional fee but don’t provide any extras for the traveling animal. Pets stay free at others, and one hotel rolls out a basketful of goodies for your dog or cat.
The Charles Hotel
The Charles Hotel, located on Harvard Square next to the JFK School of Government, is the closest pet-friendly hotel to Harvard University. Pets are welcome for a one-time fee with no restrictions on the number or kind of animal, but they cannot weigh more than 25 lb. Rooms at the AAA Four-Diamond hotel, renovated in 2006, reflect contemporary country style. The Charles is a favorite with dignitaries, celebrities and politicians. The hotel is the site of a farmer’s market on weekends in May through November.
Sheraton Commander Hotel
Sheraton Commander, a five-minute walk from Harvard and four blocks from the Metro in the heart of the Cambridge historic district, allows up to two pets per room weighing a total of 80 lb. at no additional cost. Guests who upgrade to the Club floor receive complimentary breakfast and afternoon hors d’oeuvres. A jogging path is adjacent to the property, and the Fogg Art Museum and Peabody are steps away. Valet parking is available for an additional daily fee.
Best Western Hotel Tria, a boutique hotel located a mile and a half from Harvard University, allows up to two pets in a room for an additional fee with no weight restriction. The hotel puts guests traveling with pets in rooms on the second floor. Fresh Pond and the Fresh Pond Golf Course are a short walk away, and the hotel provides free shuttle service to Harvard Square and the Alewife T station. A Starbucks and Whole Foods market are adjacent to the Hotel Tria, and many restaurants are a short ride away on the shuttle.
Hotel Marlowe, a boutique hotel on the Charles River, accepts pets of any size or weight at no additional cost. For an additional fee, the hotel provides special packages for dogs and cats that include treats and a fleece blanket. Guests bringing pets should let the hotel know ahead of time. The hotel, certified green by the city, works to reduce waste, conserve energy and use environmentally sound products. Wine tastings, scheduled for each evening, take place in the hotel’s lobby living room.
