Horseback Tours in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico

by Elissa Bassini

Puerto Aventuras is an upscale community resort area located in the heart of the Mayan Riviera on Mexico's Caribbean coast, approximately 60 miles from Cancun. A flourishing tourist destination, Puerto Aventuras has numerous programs and eco-parks featuring a variety of horseback tour activities. Whether you're after adventure, leisure or family fun, you should be able to find a horseback tour to suit your needs.

Paradise Tours

Paradise Tours (paradisetours.info) offers a Yucatan jungle adventure for tourists of all levels of riding experience. Guests are picked up from their resorts and brought to Paradise's ranch, where qualified guides conduct an orientation and help everyone choose compatible horses and saddle up. Guides then lead the group through Yucatan jungle paths and scenic trails for a 40-minute tour. The tour then takes riders to a secluded beach on the surrounding jungle's coast for a cooling dip, where you can ride the horses into the water.

Xcaret

Dubbed "Nature's Disneyland," Xcaret (xcaret.com) is an eco-archaeological theme park and day-trip destination for Puerto Aventuras tourists. Xcaret's signature horseback tours are an ideal means for exploring its "Tropical Jungle Trail," a natural depression in the Yucatan Peninsula's tropical forest featuring a variety of native birds, wildlife, trees and plants. Guides take riders at a leisurely walking pace through the winding jungle labyrinth and out across isolated beaches to view the park's underground caves, lagoons and Mayan ruins. Along the way, the guides highlight the cultural, historical and ecological significance of the sights.

Tres Rios

Tres Rios (tres-rios.com) is an ecological park based in a low subtropical jungle area on the Mayan Riviera. A quick trip up the coast from Puerto Aventuras, Tres Rios offers a comprehensive program of horseback tour activities, designed to accommodate the skill levels, special needs and preferences of tourists. The Tres Rios Stables offers open-group and individual-contract tours on jungle trails, beach rides and riding lessons. On any tour you choose, you'll experience the unspoiled nature reserve's wonders: subtropical flora, mangroves, wildlife and the eponymous "three rivers" crossing.

PA Stables

PA Stables (no website; Puerto Aventuras; 984-873-5035) offers professional lessons, clinics and sponsors local show competitions. Its main tourist adventure is the "Trail Ride, Snorkel and Picnic Trip." The trip combines highlights of the Mayan Riviera land and sea experience into one four-hour outing. This tour begins with a horseback ride through the jungle to three "cenotes," which are a special feature of the Yucatan. They are deep sinkholes formed from limestone with fresh pools at the bottom. Here the group settles in for an hour or so of snorkeling or swimming. A Mexican picnic lunch is served.
