In order to connect a television to both the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) and any receiver, both the television and the receiver must have at least one high-definition multi-media interface (HMDI) input port. If you have a high-definition television, then it will have a HDMI input port. The Bose 321 DVD Home Entertainment System has exactly one HDMI input port. The single port prevents the user from directly connecting the PS3 to the receiver. Instead an optical cable must be inserted from the PS3 into the Bose 321 entertainment system's digital optical audio input port to hear gaming options and sound effects through the receiver's speakers.

    Step 1

Plug one end of your HDMI cable into the PS3 HDMI input port. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into your television's HMDI input port. Make sure the connections are snug to ensure the delivery of PS3 graphics to your television screen.

    Step 2

Insert one end of the optical cable into the digital out optical port of the PS3. Insert the other end of the optical cable into the digital audio in connector on the Bose 321 receiver. It is labeled "D" on the media center. Make sure the connections are tight to ensure the delivery of sound from the PS3 into the Bose 321 speakers.

    Step 3

Power on your television and PS3. Adjust your television menu until you are viewing graphics from inputted media as opposed to your standard television broadcast or cable channels. You may need to refer to your television's manual to do this.

    Step 4

Make sure your PS3 video and audio settings are adjusted to the input ports of your television and Bose 321 system so that each device recognizes output from the PS3. Access the PS3 system settings screen.

    Step 5

Select "Settings" and "Display Settings" from the PS3 user interface screen. Select "Video Output Settings." Select "HDMI." It will be the first connector type on the video output settings list. Save the HDMI setting.

    Step 6

Go back to the user interface screen to display settings. Select "Settings," "Sound Settings" and "Audio Output Settings." Select the "Digital Out (Optical)" connection and save. After you do this, sounds from the PS3 will emit from the Bose 321 speakers when you power on the entertainment system.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Optical audio cables are sold with the PlayStation 3.
    • One HDMI cable is sold with the Bose 321 receiver.
    • After you select the HDMI setting from the PS3, all graphics automatically show on the television at the highest resolution possible.
