There are many options for high-speed Internet in Maine. These vary widely in terms of price, speed of Internet access, availability and other options. In general, prices will be cheaper, and download speeds will be higher where cable Internet is available, though DSL is often affordable as well. Cornerstone Communications bills itself as the high-speed Internet provider for rural Maine. The company offers residential and business DSL and wireless Internet. It largely serves Western Penobscot and Southern Piscataquis counties, but the company maintains an up-to-date list of the towns in its coverage area on its website. At publication, DSL and wireless high-speed Internet services through Cornerstone start at $39.95 a month. The standard for both services include download speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, unlimited Internet access and four email accounts.
FairPoint offers Internet access to several areas of Maine, including Portland. Starter, standard, premium and ultra Internet plans are available. As of July 2011, Maine residents can purchase FairPoint services starting at $20.99 a month. The lowest-priced plan is ideal for Internet browsing and checking email. Download speed is 768 kilobytes per second and upload speed 128 Kbps. For $35.99, customers can invest in the standard package, which is four times faster than the starter package. If gaming and watching movies online is your passion, premium or ultra plans are ideal choices. Priced at $40, the premium download speed is 7 Mbps. Ultra costs $50 and features 15 Mbps downloads.
