High-Speed Internet Locations in Maine

by Tonya Whitaker

There are many options for high-speed Internet in Maine. These vary widely in terms of price, speed of Internet access, availability and other options. In general, prices will be cheaper, and download speeds will be higher where cable Internet is available, though DSL is often affordable as well. In contrast, prices will be more expensive and speeds will be lower in rural areas.

Great Works Intenet

Great Works Internet delivers residential and business Internet services to Maine consumers. The cost of Internet depends on the download speed. As of July 2011, GWI's cheapest Internet plan costs $44.95 a month for 7 megabytes per second (Mbps) of download speed. For 20 Mbps, customers dish out from $54.95 to $64.95 a month. All high-speed Internet plans feature five email addresses, connection for up to five computers in the household and free spam filtering and virus protection.

RedZone Wireless

RedZone Wireless offers high-speed Internet coverage in select areas of Maine, including Augusta, Hermon and Acadia National Park. Access is obtained through Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the state and residential and business accounts. For instance, if someone is traveling through Maine and in need of Internet access, he can log on through the Wi-Fi pay-as-you-go service. The cost of residential and business Internet access depends on the area where the service is needed. With download speeds up to 25 Mbps, RedZone's RedRocket is touted as the fastest Internet service available to Maine residents. As of July 2011, the cost for RedRocket is $64.95.

Cornerstone Communications

Cornerstone Communications bills itself as the high-speed Internet provider for rural Maine. The company offers residential and business DSL and wireless Internet. It largely serves Western Penobscot and Southern Piscataquis counties, but the company maintains an up-to-date list of the towns in its coverage area on its website. At publication, DSL and wireless high-speed Internet services through Cornerstone start at $39.95 a month. The standard for both services include download speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, unlimited Internet access and four email accounts.

FairPoint Communications

FairPoint offers Internet access to several areas of Maine, including Portland. Starter, standard, premium and ultra Internet plans are available. As of July 2011, Maine residents can purchase FairPoint services starting at $20.99 a month. The lowest-priced plan is ideal for Internet browsing and checking email. Download speed is 768 kilobytes per second and upload speed 128 Kbps. For $35.99, customers can invest in the standard package, which is four times faster than the starter package. If gaming and watching movies online is your passion, premium or ultra plans are ideal choices. Priced at $40, the premium download speed is 7 Mbps. Ultra costs $50 and features 15 Mbps downloads.
