A baby shower is an exciting event for a soon-to-be mother. Friends and family gather to celebrate the joyous occasion that will soon take place. Putting on a baby shower for your friend or relative doesn't mean you have to break the bank for fancy decorations. You can decorate your home or party site with a variety of handmade baby shower ideas.
Baby Blocks
Homemade baby blocks form a decorative centerpiece for your baby shower. Create and design the blocks with a few items from a craft store. Start with plain wooden blocks; add light-colored wallpaper, stickers and markers to decorate. Use scissors and glue as necessary. The blocks can include numbers and letters or focus on blue or pink, depending on the baby's sex. As a bonus, the pregnant mother can take the blocks home after the shower and give them to the baby as a toy later.
Banner
A homemade banner provides a welcome for guests and the mother-to-be. The banner can feature the name of the child or simply "Congratulations." Use warm colors such as light blue, yellow and pink. Use stock or construction paper to design your own pattern, or use wallpaper or scrapbook paper for a decorative banner. Tie the paper together using a ribbon or string. Add flowers to each end of the banner for an extra touch.
Bouquets
Creating colorful bouquets and placing them around the room produces a vibrant feeling. Arrange light blue, pink and yellow flowers in a decorative vase or pot. If you don't have access to a garden or don't want to spend money on flowers, you can make your own flowers with green pipe cleaners as stems and colorful tissue paper as the flowers. This handmade decoration gives you a lot of freedom to spruce up the room your own way.
Photo Collage
Baby showers often involve a trip down Memory Lane. Enhance the time shared by friends and family at the shower by posting pictures from the past around the room. Enlist the help of the mother's family to obtain her own baby pictures. Make copies of the photos and create a collage by overlapping the photos and gluing them together on a piece of construction paper. Have the collage laminated and hang or post it in the party room. If you can get them, include photos of the other guests as babies to add to the fun.
Baby Sock Clothesline
With a yarn, clothespins and some baby socks, create a colorful decoration that doubles as a gift for the mother. Position a yarn across an entryway or mantle. Hang a baby sock for each guest from the clothesline. Each guest writes a personal note to the mother-to-be and places the note inside one of the baby socks. At the end of the party, alert the guest of honor to the notes inside the socks and let her enjoy the personal messages from each friend or relative.
