Gypsy Theme Party Ideas

If you are looking for a fanciful party idea, consider a gypsy theme. It is easily adaptable to either an indoor or outdoor event. Elaborate food is not required and you may already have many of the objects used for decoration. Invite your guests to come in costume and incorporate gypsy activities to keep your guests entertained.

    Venues

You have multiple options for your party venue. You could turn your living room or kitchen into a gypsy tearoom, complete with low lights and the smell of savory cooking. You might set up a large tent in your backyard where people can gaze at the stars and pretend to be spending the evening in a gypsy camp. Or move the party out to the woods with a tent for the dinner, a communal campfire, guitar and violin music and allow the sounds of nature to mix with the laughter.

    Decorations

Candles, lanterns or low lights could light your tearoom. Spread brightly patterned scarves over tables and windows. Set a large clear ball on the table or use a real crystal ball for a gypsy fortune-teller prop. Alternatively, locate an old Magic Eight Ball to use for telling fortunes. Other options for your decorations could include tarot cards, jugs of wine, tambourines and finger cymbals, beaded curtains, floor pillows and rugs. Many of these decorations would also work for a tent venue or in the woods.

    Food

A hearty, thick stew with warm, savory homemade bread could make up your main dish. If you use the campfire, you could cook the stew over the fire and bake your bread in the coals or heat slabs of thick toast on metal trays. Cabbage rolls, sausages or wild game offer other options for a main dish. Serve fresh fruits and nuts for dessert. Make loose-leaf tea, which can double as a source of tea leaves for fortune-telling.

    Party Activities

Invite a colorful gypsy fortune-teller to read the crystal ball or tarot cards for your guests. Or use the Magic Eight Ball to let guests ask their own divination questions. Invite someone to toss the rune stones or read tea leaves for the party guests. Play gypsy music on your mp3 player so your guests can try out some improvised gypsy dances or engage some gypsy dancers to perform. Your guests may enjoy listening to a storyteller spin flights of fancy.
