Fredericksburg Motels

by Meg Jernigan

Fredericksburg, Virginia, located about 50 miles south of Washington, D.C., was the site of several major Civil War battles, and George Washington’s boyhood home, Ferry Farm, is across the Rappahannock River. Fredericksburg motels tend to be chain properties along major highways north and west of the city. They offer moderately priced rooms within an easy drive of the city’s attractions.

Exit 130 Interstate 95

Exit 130 is directly west of downtown Fredericksburg. Three large shopping malls dominate the interchange and five motel chains, including Residence Inn, Super 8 and America's Best Value Inn maintain properties there. Quality Inn near Central Park is a pet-friendly property that provides guests complimentary access to nearby Gold’s Gym. Best Western Central Plaza, adjacent to both Central Park and Spotsylvania Towne Center shopping malls, is within walking distance of restaurants and the Fredericksburg Expo Center. In addition, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn operate motels a short distance north of the intersection.

Courtyard by Marriott is the only chain motel in downtown Fredericksburg. The Colonial Motel and the Relax Inn on the north side of downtown offer bare bones, budget-friendly accommodations. Most of the available lodging in town is in bed and breakfast properties. The Inn at the Old Silk Mill is a 30-room inn within walking distance of Amtrak and the Virginia Railway Express, a major commuter line between Washington and Fredericksburg. Housed in a home built in 1770, the Richard Johnston Inn welcomes pets in some of its nine rooms. Special arrangements must be made for children under 12.

Jefferson Davis Highway

Route 1, the Jefferson Davis Highway, crosses the Rappahannock River north of downtown Fredericksburg and cuts through the west side of town. The Thomas Jefferson Motel is a motor court-style mom and pop motel next to a strip mall. Located a little farther south, Dunning Mills Inn is an extended stay motel with budget-friendly, 500-square-foot efficiency suites with full-size kitchen appliances. One ground level suite is accessible for the mobility impaired. The pet-friendly motel has an in-ground swimming pool.

Exit 133 Interstate 95

Exit 133, north of Fredericksburg, is the site of almost a dozen chain motels. Three shopping centers and a broad selection of restaurants are nearby. Comfort Suites is a moderately priced smoke-free motel with a fitness room and heated indoor saltwater swimming pool. Wingate by Wyndham is an extended-stay motel offering standard rooms and executive suites with Jacuzzi tubs and kitchenettes. The motel’s Discover Fredericksburg package includes discounted accommodations, reduced admission to local attractions and trolley tour tickets.
