Northern Indiana is a combination of counties which offer big-city appeal with small-town friendliness. You can find top-notch restaurants and entertainment venues just minutes down the road from mom-and-pop stores and outdoor activities. There are also several motels in the area from which to choose, and the bonus of staying at one of them, in addition to the easy-on-the-pocketbook rates, is that there are plenty of family activities nearby.

Motel 6 South Bend

This national chain offers some of the lowest rates around, so you won’t find any five-star frills. But the rooms are clean, there’s an outdoor pool for when the northern Indiana climate cooperates, and kids 17 and under stay free. Located within five minutes of the motel are the University of Notre Dame campus, the College Football Hall of Fame, and Studebaker National Museum. The golden arches of McDonald’s also are right across the street.

Days Inn Fort Wayne

In addition to roll-away beds and cribs being available, all the rooms here include a refrigerator to store extra kid snacks and bottles of milk if needed. There’s also high-speed Internet and TV with HBO, plus the entire family is welcome each morning for the free Daybreak Lite Breakfast. Located just minutes away from the property are the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Black Pine Animal Park and Parkview Field, home of minor league baseball’s Fort Wayne Tincaps.

Super 8 Shipshewana

This motel may be located in the heart of Amish country, but its amenities won’t leave you in the dark. Among those offered are queen-size beds, flat-screen TVs with cable and in-room movies, free Wi-Fi connections and complimentary continental breakfast. Two nearby attractions are popular family outings. Everyone can get creative while crafting homemade ceramic items at Paint Me Pottery. They provide the materials, like a mug, and all you have to do is paint away. The other is Splash Universe, an indoor water park which has everything from a lazy river to dual vortex slides to relaxing hot tubs.

Red Roof Inn Michigan City

All the rooms here are equipped with basic items such as free Wi-Fi and in-room coffeemakers, and some even have microwave/mini-fridge units. Families might think that no swimming pool is a drawback, but don’t worry. Washington Park & Zoo and the Indiana Dunes are just minutes away, where visitors can enjoy a variety of family activities including swimming, hiking, fishing and horseback riding.
