A rich naval history defines the city of Norfolk, Virginia, whose mascot mermaid is visible in many parts of the city. While in downtown Norfolk, travelers can visit museums, go on a cruise from the port, conduct business in the government center, attend a play in the theater district and enjoy the active nightlife of the revitalized downtown area. Most of the city's hotels are convenient for visitors, but the hotels that are closest to the waterfront put them right in the middle of the busy activity center of downtown Norfolk.

Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel

Located directly on the waterfront, the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel offers guest rooms and suites, some of which have balconies that overlook the water. The exclusive Sheraton Club rooms give visitors an upgrade in amenities and access to the Club Lounge, which serves complimentary hors d'oeuvres with beverage of choice. Dine in the City Dock Restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The City Dock bar offers beer, wine and cocktails. Outback Steak House, within walking distance, serves steaks and Australian specialties. For fine dining at lunchtime or in the evening, visit Vintage Kitchen nearby and sample the shrimp and grits, lump crabcakes or five-spice duck.

Norfolk Waterside Marriott

The Norfolk Waterside Marriott looks out over the water and provides charm and elegance with marble touches and antique furnishings in the lobby. The 24-story hotel has guest rooms, suites and a presidential suite with fireplace. Swim in the indoor pool or work out in the fitness room overlooking the water. Relax with your favorite drink in the Piano Lounge. Shula's 347 Steakhouse serves lunch and dinner on the premises and offers premium Angus beef. While staying at the Waterside Marriott, visit the Waterside Marketplace for dining out, shopping and Norfolk nightlife. Don't miss Joe's Crab Shack for its variety of Steampot flavors, including the Ragin Cajun, the Samuel Adams and the Old Bay.

Courtyard Norfolk Downtown

Located near the MacArthur Center shopping complex, the Courtyard Norfolk Downtown provides an enclosed swimming pool and hot tub for year-round use by its guests. The spa king guest room has a jetted whirlpool tub included in the unit. The business library offers Internet stations with free access. Take some down time in the media pods that offer free Wi-Fi and personal televisions. Have breakfast or dinner in The Bistro Eat Drink Connect, located inside the Courtyard Norfolk Downtown. Eat at California Pizza Kitchen for more than just pizza: Try the steak tacos, clam linguine and deli subs.

Tazewell Hotel and Suites

A boutique hotel with 58 large guest rooms, studio suites and two-room suites, the Tazewill sits a block from the MacArthur Center Mall and the Wells Theater in Norfolk's theater hub. Guests in the standard and studio rooms may request a mini refrigerator and microwave, but they come with the two-room suites. Dine in Empire for an upscale but casual meal of hot or cold tapas. Snappers, also located in the building, offers fresh seafood, soups and sandwiches. When you stay at the Tazewell you are only a few blocks from the waterfront, the Waterside Festival Marketplace and the Battleship Wisconsin at Nauticus.
