DIY Strongman Costume

by Alex Smith

Strongmen were circus performers who performed feats of great strength in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While most strongmen looked like ordinary people, enough wore the same style of costume that a stereotypical image emerged. Your strongman costume will be made of clothes that you can find at your local thrift store or may even have in your closet, plus a barbell that can be made out of PVC pipe and plastic foam. Be sure to slick your hair down and walk with a swagger when wearing this costume.

Items you will need

  • PVC pipe, 1-inch in diameter
  • Hacksaw
  • 2 plastic foam balls
  • Black spray paint
  • White paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Flesh-colored, long-sleeved bodysuit
  • Balloons
  • Pants
  • Shirt
  • Belt
  • Makeup pencil
Step 1

Cut a 3-foot piece of 1-inch PVC pipe with a hacksaw.

Step 2

Gently push two plastic foam balls onto the ends of the PVC to create a barbell. The larger the balls, the more comical the effect will be.

Step 3

Spray the entire barbell -- PVC pipe and balls -- with black spray paint, then use the paintbrush to paint "500" on each ball with white paint.

Step 4

Put on a flesh-colored bodysuit. Stuff the arms with balloons to simulate muscles.

Step 5

Put on a pair of black pants and a black sleeveless T-shirt or tank top. You can also wear a red pair of pants with either a red or red-and-white striped shirt.

Step 6

Wear a thick belt around your waist.

Step 7

Draw a handlebar mustache with a black makeup pencil.
