Although local regulations can prohibit it, there are some areas that allow the baiting of deer. Deer are shy animals, which can make the process challenging. However, there are various methods for baiting deer during the daytime in hunting season. A commonly used bait is a mixture of peanut butter and molasses, which you can create yourself.
Step 1
Rinse and wash the coffee can with baking soda and water to remove any debris and coffee residue from the can. Allow the can to dry fully.
Step 2
Cover the exterior of the can with camouflage tape.
Step 3
Drill a small hole at the center of the bottom of the can. Ensure the hole is large enough for a wire clothes hanger to fit into.
Step 4
Straighten out the bends in the clothes hanger, then bend one end of the hanger to form a loop that is slightly smaller in diameter than the size of the can. Form the hanger so the free end of the hanger comes back into the center of the loop and upwards at a 90-degree angle. The loop should resemble a lowercase "E."
Step 5
Insert the upright end of the wire through the can from the inside. The can should hang on the wire. Form a loop on the other end of the wire to hang the can in the desired location.
Step 6
Drill multiple 1/8-inch holes into the lid of the can with a drill and 1/8-inch drill bit.
Step 7
Mix peanut butter and molasses in a bowl to a semi-thick consistency, similar to that of cookie batter. Fill the can with the mixture and secure the lid onto the can with duct tape. Do not cover the holes in the lid with the tape.
Step 8
Hang the can in a desired sunny location, approximately 4 to 5 feet off the ground.
Tips & Warnings
- Set the peanut butter trap slightly before the hunting season to allow the deer to become used to the can.
- Before the hunting season, research your local and state regulations concerning deer baiting to ensure its legality.
