Adventure seekers that enjoy the need for speed will enjoy the fast-paced action of riding dirt bikes. The area around Denison, in northeast Texas, offers several locations where dirt bike enthusiasts can enjoy some fun. These range from state park trails to private motocross tracks.
State Parks
Eisenhower State Park is spread out along the shoreline of Lake Texoma, around 2 miles northwest of Denison. Managed by Texas Parks & Wildlife (tpwd.state.tx.us), the park covers an area of more than 400 acres. A 10-acre ATV trail site in the east of the park provides routes that ATV and dirt bike riders can use. As of August 2011, the park opens from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and dirt bike riders planning to use the trails must first obtain an OHV permit from Texas Parks & Wildlife.
Camping Parks
Those who enjoy camping as well as riding should consider Red River ATV Park (redriveratv.com). This 400-acre park is located near the Red River at Bonham, around 22 miles southeast of Denison. The park opens for general use on Saturday and Sunday, and can also open during the week for private appointments. Dirt bike riders can enjoy the trails in the park, with other activities available including camping, fishing and swimming. The park also hosts a monthly cross-country race for those who enjoy competitive riding.
Motocross Tracks
Dirt bike enthusiasts can visit North 40 Cycle Park (northfortycyclepark.com) in Sherman, around 9 miles south of Denison. This park opens to the public on the weekends, and also allows those that sign up as key club members to use the facility during the week. They also offer a school, at which trained instructors will teach beginners about dirt bike riding. The I-35 MX track (i35mx.com) lies around 35 miles west of Denison, in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The park generally opens on the weekend, and riders can also make private appointments to use the track during the week.
Private Parks
One of the largest ATV parks in North Texas lies about 60 miles west of Denison, in Bulcher. While a little further afield, the Red River Motorcycle Trails Park (redrivermotorcycletrails.com) covers an area of around 2,700 acres, and offers dirt bike riders many miles of trails to enjoy. These range from easier routes for beginners to challenging routes for more experienced riders. The park opens to the general public on the weekends, and also host regular competitive events at state and national level.
