Witches are not only steeped in history and lore in American culture, they are a lifestyle choice for some individuals. For many others, the closest they come to becoming witches is to dress up like one for a Halloween party. Add your own personal style and flair to the traditional witch costume by dressing up a black dress with special fabric and makeup.

Items you will need

  • Long cotton spandex black dress
  • Fabric pencil
  • Wooden yardstick
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Black velvet hat
  • Green face paint
  • Pale yellow face paint
  • Fake eyelashes
  • Green mascara
  • Ruby red lipstick
Step 1

Find a black cotton-spandex blend dress that you don't mind cutting up and turning into something else as the base for your witch costume. Draw a line with a fabric pencil across the waistline with a yardstick and cut off the top of the dress from the waist up.

Step 2

Fold the dress in half lengthwise and unfold it. Draw a line down the crease with a fabric pencil. Cut the dress in half with a pair of fabric scissors along the line. Cut a piece of fabric from the dress that's 2 1/2 inches wide and equal in length to your waist measurement. Fold the strip in half and pin a 1/4-inch inseam with sewing pins. Iron the fold and sew it down with a sewing machine, removing the pins as you sew.

Step 3

Pin the strip to the modified waistline of your cut-up black dress and attach it there with the sewing machine. Add a zipper up the back of the dress, which you have now fashioned into a skirt. Add purple velvet ruffled strips to the front of the skirt at 3-inch intervals to add style and flair to your witch's dress.

Step 4

Pair the skirt with a black, button-down dress shirt that has flared sleeves and a flared collar. Remove the buttons and change them out with skull buttons or bright purple buttons to match the ruffles on the skirt.

Step 5

Don a black velvet witch's hat to add a finishing touch to your costume. Paint your face and hands with green face paint. Add pale yellow paint to your cheekbones as a highlight. Put on long, fake eyelashes and paint them with green mascara. Complete the look with bright ruby red lipstick.
