How to Decorate a Home With Ribbons and Candles

by Belinda Tucker, Demand Media

Decorators rave about candles and ribbon for creating something special in any home decor. Nothing adds warmth to a room like candlelight. Splashing a bit of color into the picture with ribbon accents completes the package. On any budget, candles and ribbon are the answer to creating a seasonal taste of color and festivity. Candle screens, tapers, pillars, votives, sconces, hurricane enclosures and ribbon in every color offer a wealth of options for change.

    Step 1

Inspect your home carefully to decide on possible changes and additions for your home. Candles can be dramatic, calming or romantic. The impact depends on the way they are grouped and displayed. Candles can be grouped together with different sizes for an interesting arrangement, or grouped with different colors for another variation. Ribbon accents around a candle or its holder bring color into the picture. Think about each room and its function before deciding on changes.

    Step 2

Place decorative candles that you do not plan to light as a practical and safe choice for high traffic areas where children and pets play. Pillar candles can be dressed up by protective and colorful hurricanes or colorful ribbons reflective of the season.

    Step 3

Position a dramatic candle screen to add romance to any area in the home. Like other room dividers, candle screens come in different sizes, with one to three panels in most cases. This size of decorative element makes an impact, providing elegance and mystery to a large space.

    Step 4

Arrange a festive and seasonal centerpiece for the dining room or kitchen area. Recycled paper ribbons are perfect for adding some much needed punch to a boring glass vase of flowers.

    Step 5

Tie colorful ribbon around plain glass sconces or neutral candles to add some punch to an otherwise bland candle color or piece of ordinary glass. Ribbons add a soft touch to wrought iron or other metal fixtures as a feminine complement of texture.

    Step 6

Line up votive candles around the tub to create the perfect retreat. If the tub is old-fashioned without a ledge, then place a solitary pillar candle near the sink with a coordinated color to tie in with the season or your bathroom color scheme.

    Step 7

Group candles together, mixing sizes, shapes and colors to create different moods. Tie a colorful ribbon around the group as a finishing touch.

    Step 8

Position lit candles in front of a hanging mirror to cast light and shadows throughout a room. This decorating idea is an inviting addition to a foyer or any other room of the house.

    Step 9

Set tapers on bedside tables or on the mantel in pairs at either end for a dramatic and inexpensive addition to the decor of the room. Tapers add height and elegance to any surface and are no longer exclusive to the dining room.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Decorating candles with ribbon is an excellent idea, but can be dangerous if you light the candle with the ribbon in the path of the flame. Be sure to take the ribbon off the candle before lighting it.
    • Candles start fires and should not be left burning when you leave the room for an extended period of time.
