Dance & Astrology

by Ann LaPan

When astrology, the study of the influence of planetary guides, meets dance, which translates expression into physical movement, various interpretations can result. The 12 signs of Western astrology are divided into the elemental influences of fire, earth, air and water that create their own effect. Dance styles can be categorized by element, too. Different people find different styles of dance appealing. People who have a lot of the water element in their astrology charts, for example, will be attracted to more emotional expression than those who are more focused on the earth elements and are more interested in precision.

The sky's the limit in the optimistic, highly active fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Physical performance attracts people who are influenced by these signs. Swing, one of the most popular dance styles since the 1940s, with its snappy steps, and the more recent hip-hop and break dancing, with their innovation and daring moves, are styles that would attract people influenced by the fire element.

Ballroom dancing, from the fox trot to the paso doble, are styles of dance that people who have a lot of the earth element in their birth chart are attracted to, being entertained by the accuracy of each dance's characteristics. They may also enjoy the country line dancing and square dancing that are made of easy-to-master steps that require little emotional expression. People who appreciate these dance styles may have more of the signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn in their astrology charts than others.

The astrological element air is sociable and communicative. The signs that are designated by air are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Gemini likes to talk and gather information, Libra likes to relate and Aquarius likes to try new things that embrace humanity. Salsa is a dance that people who are influenced by air signs enjoy because it is a social venture. Like the impulses of the brain, salsa is quick. Contemporary and jazz dance styles also fit into the air classification, as they are progressive and open to interpretation.

Tradition, emotion and endurance are characteristics of the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The waltz is one of the oldest and most popular of all dances, using the characteristics of the three-beat measure format that resembles the rise and fall of the ocean waves. Ballet is also a watery dance, with its regimented discipline and physical strain that it takes to create the depth of expressive dance.
