by Rebecca Macken

Memorial Day is a time to honor and celebrate the sacrifices of America's fallen soldiers by paying homage through special events and parades. Cuyahoga County, in northeastern Ohio, is home to Cleveland and 57 other communities. The area hosts several parades in communities large and small on the Monday holiday.

The city of Cleveland's Memorial Day celebration includes a remembrance ceremony on the lawn of the Garfield Memorial, preceded by a parade. In 2011, the parade began at Lake View Cemetery and continued to the memorial. Parade-goers were encouraged to bring blankets and picnic lunches. Past events have included concerts by ensembles such as the local Cleveland Letter Carriers' Band.

The city of Berea, southwest of Cleveland, has a Memorial Day parade sponsored by American Legion Post 91. In 2011, the parade began in the municipal parking lot at Coe Lake and traveled along Bagley Road to Front Street and the Triangle. After the parade, a remembrance ceremony is held at McKelvey Park.

Bay Village

The eastern Cleveland suburb of Bay Village's annual Memorial Day parade starts off at Lakeside Cemetery. The parade route continues east from the cemetery along Lake Road to Cahoon Park, where it ends at the Cahoon Park Gazebo.

The community of Brecksville, in the southeastern corner of the county, hosts an annual Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony. The parade begins at City Hall on Brecksville road and continues along Brecksville Road to the Brecksville Cemetery on Highland Drive. The remembrance ceremony, which takes place at the cemetery, immediately follows the parade. For the 2011 Memorial Day parade, Brecksville honored the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War by including Civil War re-enactors among the marchers.

Maple Heights

Maple Heights, on the southeastern border of Cleveland, has a Memorial Day Parade along Mayville Avenue. The parade route heads west on Libby Road to Lee Road, ending at the Honor Roll at the Veterans Memorial near City Hall.

Rocky River

Hosted by the Lakewood and Rocky River Joint Veterans Council, the community of Rocky River, west of Cleveland, begins its Memorial Day Parade at the Rocky River High School. Continuing east along Detroit Road, the parade route continues to the Lakewood Cemetery, where a remembrance ceremony caps off the event.
