How to Crochet a Football Helmet Hat

by Joy Prescott, Demand Media

Keep your head toasty warm at chilly football games with a crocheted football helmet hat. Make the hat in your favorite team colors to showcase your spirit. Crochet the football helmet hat in rounds from the top down to the top of the ears. Then crochet earflaps and sew them onto the hat to keep the chill off your ears. A chin strap serves double duty. It holds the hat in place with hook and loop tape and keeps your chin warm as well.

    Make the Hat

    Step 1

Work round 1. Chain five and slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring. Chain three and make nine double crochet stitches in the ring. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. 10 stitches.

    Step 2

Work round 2. Chain three and make two double crochet in same stitch as joining. Make three double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. 30 stitches.

    Step 3

Work round 3. Chain three. Make two double crochet in the next stitch and then double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. 45 stitches. Continue to increase in increments of 16 stitches each round until hat covers crown of head.

    Step 4

Work round 4. Chain three. Make a double crochet in the next stitch. Make two double crochet in the next stitch and double crochet in the next two stitches. Repeat around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. 60 stitches.

    Step 5

Work round 5. Chain three. Make a double crochet in the next two stitches. Make two double crochet in the next stitch and double crochet in the next two stitches. Repeat around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. 75 stitches.

    Step 6

Work round 6. Chain three. Make a double crochet in the next three stitches. Make two double crochet in the next stitch and double crochet in the next two stitches. Repeat around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. 90 stitches.

    Step 7

Work round 7. Chain three and work one double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. Continue to work rounds of double crochet stitches until hat reaches just above the ears or desired length. Fasten off.

    Make the Earflaps

    Step 1

Work row 1. Leave a 12-inch length of yarn for sewing and chain 18. Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. Double crochet in each stitch across. 16 stitches. Turn and chain three each row.

    Step 2

Work rows 2 -- 5. Chain three and decrease in next two stitches. Double crochet in each stitch across to last two stitches. Decrease in last the two stitches. Eight stitches remain at the end of Row 5.

    Step 3

Work row 6. Chain three and decrease across to the last stitch. Double crochet in the last stitch. 5 stitches. Fasten off. Repeat to make another earflap. Sew an earflap to each side of hat so that ears will be covered when hat is worn. Join yarn with a slip stitch at any point on edge of hat, chain one and single crochet in same stitch as joining. Work a single crochet stitch in each stitch and row around the entire perimeter of the hat.

    Finish the Hat

    Step 1

Make the chin strap. Work row 1. Chain 10. Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. Double crochet in each stitch across. 7 stitches. Turn and chain three each row.

    Step 2

Work row 2. Chain three and double crochet in each stitch across. Seven stitches. Repeat until 20 rows completed or chin strap reaches from one earflap to the other across chin. Do not fasten off.

    Step 3

Chain one and single crochet around entire chin strap working two single crochet in corners. Fasten off leaving a 12-inch length of yarn for sewing. Sew to one earflap. Attach hook and loop tape to other end of chin strap and to other earflap.

    Tips & Warnings

    • To decrease when working double crochet, leave the last two loops of a double crochet stitch on the hook and then work the next double crochet stitch also reserving the last two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
