In 1948, a former cheerleader living in the Dallas area created the first cheerleader camp. These camps teach new skills to veteran cheerleaders, as well as helping newcomers develop a better understanding of the sport. Fees and duration vary by program. Mesquite, Texas, located on the outskirts of Dallas, offers several different camp programs.
Texas Gymnastic Training Center
The Texas Gymnastic Training Center (tgtconline.com) runs one of the cheerleading camps in Mesquite. Sessions are supervised by former Olympic gymnast Jay Javad Khorsand. The camp offers two sessions beginning in June and lasting a total of five days. Sessions include boy/girl team, girls and boys (ages 6 and up), pre-school (ages 3 to 5) and power tumbling. Parents provide a light snack. As of June 2011, camp fees are $120 per child. Sibling discounts are available.
Terrell Brown Cheerleading Camp
In June, the city of Mesquite hosts a sports weekend featuring National Football League player Terrell Brown. Activities include a free cheerleading camp held for one day at a local venue. The camp is open to children in grades 2 to 8. Camp starts at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged, but participants can register onsite between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. on event day. Refer to the Resources section of the article for additional program information.
Cheer Athletics Summer Camp
Enjoy three days of tumbling and stunt work at the Cheer Athletics Summer Camp (cheerathletics.com). ESPN and Fox television have featured teams trained by Cheer Athletics. Starting in July, the facility hosts three camp sessions. Each session lasts a total of six hours. Camps are open to non-Cheer Athletic members. Camp instructors are the regular coaches who work with Cheer Athletics top athletes. As of June 2011, program fees are $99 or $139 per child, depending on the program selected.
ASI Gymnastics Cheerleading Camp
ASI Gymnastics (asigymnastics.com) offers cheerleading camp sessions all year. Programs are designed for children 6 and older. A popular option is the mini-camp, offered from February until March. The camp combines elements from other cheerleading classes offered by the gym, including power tumbling and stunt work. Contact the venue directly for camp fee information.
