Rain sticks are musical instruments that capture the sound of beans inside of a tube to mimic the sound of rain. Rain sticks are made out of cactus, bamboo, cardboard and PVC pipe. Make a simple rain stick out of PVC pipe using standard hardware and dried beans. PVC rain sticks will be more resonant than rain sticks made out of cardboard because the plastic is harder.

Items you will need

  • Tape measure
  • PVC pipe, 3 inches by 48 inches
  • Drill
  • Drill bit, 1/8 inch
  • 24 nails, 1/8 inch by 3 inches
  • PVC glue
  • 2 3-inch PVC end caps
  • 3 cups of dried beans
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint
Step 1

Drill 24 1/8-inch holes that are spaced 2 inches apart on your pipe. The holes will spiral around the pipe and complete the circumference twice.

Step 2

Insert a nail into each hole and apply PVC glue around the nails. Let the glue dry according to the instructions on the canister.

Step 3

Glue one end cap on the pipe, pour the beans inside of the pipe and glue on the other end cap. Let the glue dry.

Step 4

Decorate your PVC rain stick by painting it, or leave it white if you prefer.
