British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province, sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. For centuries, the mountains, oceans, lakes and wildlife of this region inspired artists, explorers and outdoor enthusiasts. British Columbia hoteliers and resort management companies elevate lodging design to an art form, and provide an eclectic selection of boutique hotels and resorts for discerning travelers.

Victoria Hotels and Resorts

The Gatsby Mansion and Hotel is the quintessential Victoria boutique lodging venue. Three ornate buildings house the hotel rooms. The 1872 Middle House was the original cottage on the property. Italianate architecture distinguishes the Judge's House, built in 1877. Hand-painted ceiling frescoes and stained glass windows embellish the Gatsby Mansion, built in 1897. The hotel is located on Victoria's historic inner harbor. Rates include breakfast. Those seeking more of a resort experience will enjoy the oceanfront Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa. This resort boasts a gourmet restaurant and a full service spa, and offers packages that highlight these amenities. Guests may pay a nominal fee to dock their boats at the Brentwood Bay Marina.

Funky Vancouver Boutique

Vancouver British Columbia is a hip and vibrant city, which lends itself to the boutique hotel concept.The Opus Hotel, located in Vancouver's Yaletown district, provides a remedy for hotel humdrum syndrome. Its designers created five room decor schemes to represent the lifestyles of their typical guests, and developed five fictional characters to inspire their creations. Billy's room, for example, features pop-art, while Dede is a leopard skin and fake fur kind of gal. There's a Lifestyle Concierge quiz, which makes suggestions for Vancouver activities based on your answer. The Opus Bar features Lifestyle Cocktails that match your room theme.

Elegant Vancouver Boutique

If your tastes run more towards the cosmopolitan than the quirky, you will prefer the L'Hermitage Hotel, near Vancouver's lively Robson Street. Rooms feature Italian marble bathrooms filled with high-end bath products, and the hotel boasts a saltwater lap pool, so that you can pretend that you are swimming in the ocean. Your dog may also meet "Hippo," the hotel's self-proclaimed "canine concierge." The French bulldog, featured on the hotel's website, introduces the pet-friendly services, including treats, a comfy bed, designer food and water bowls and dog-walking services.

British Columbia's world-class ski resorts constantly receive high marks from publications such as "Ski Magazine." Winter Olympics site Whistler/Blackcomb stands in the forefront, and the Nita Lake Lodge offers luxury boutique lodging. Its studios, one-bedrooms and multi-bedroom suites boast ultra-modern decor, and the lodge has a library, a hot tub and a game room. Ashram Spa by Therapy Ayurveda, located on the premises offers spa treatments and yoga classes, and Innovative Fitness offers indoor and outdoor fitness and sport conditioning. The Sun Peaks Resort is British Columbia's second largest ski area. The Heffley Boutique Inn offers ski-in/ski-out accommodations. Bright colors and wood furnishings embellish its rooms and suites, which feature kitchenettes. the hotel has a crafts store, a deli and a small grocery market.
