Dirk Pitt Adventures
"Treasure of Khan" is the 19th Dirk Pitt novel produced by Clive Cussler; Cussler teamed up with his son Dirk Cussler to write the book. The Dirk Pitt character is a tall, rangy, green-eyed graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy who works as a marine engineer for the fictional National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA). His sidekick, Al Giordino, is short, stocky, very strong and possesses a dry wit. Together these two characters regularly manage to get themselves into deep trouble, extract themselves with brains and brawn and save the world from a major or minor disaster along the way.
"Treasure of Khan" starts off with Pitt rescuing an oil-mining survey crew on Lake Baikal in Russia, then almost losing his own research vessel and life due to an earthquake-caused wave. Pitt and Giordino set out to track down the cause of the freak events on the Russian lake and the trail leads them into Siberia and Mongolia, the former stomping grounds of Genghis Khan.
The search for the source of the mysterious earthquakes lead Pitt and company into Mongolia, where the owner of an oil company and distant descendant of Genghis Khan is attempting to monopolize the region's oil resources by destroying the oil production capabilities of the Middle East. As Pitt attempts to uncover the plot, he falls into several life-threatening situations from which he daringly escapes. The action remains non-stop until the evil plot is foiled and a lost treasure discovered.
