Birmingham Hotels With Pets

by T.L. Chancellor

Birmingham is the capital of Alabama and was the epicenter of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. The city houses the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. There are plenty of pet-friendly hotels in the city, but some are friendlier than others. Some allow pets to stay for free, while others charge pet owners as much as $100.

Pets for Free

Two national chains, Motel 6 and La Quinta, allow pets to stay for free and have locations in Birmingham. The Motel 6 Birmingham on Vulcan Road allows pets to stay for free as long as they are well behaved and are under their owner’s control at all times. Hotel housekeeping will not service a room with an unattended pet, and the motel’s policy allows guests and their pets to be removed if the pet poses a health or safety risk to other guests. Motel 6 does not restrict pets based on size or number of pets, and the policy extends to service animals. La Quinta’s policy is similar, as rooms will be serviced only if a pet is under an owner’s control or is not in the room. No fees or up-front deposit are required.

For a Small Fee

Many hotels in Birmingham allow pets to stay for a fee, and one allows them to stay for under $10 per night. Super 8 on Vulcan Road adheres to a national policy that allows pets to stay for $5 per night per pet. This Super 8 features a business center and a free continental breakfast. It is near three major shopping centers and just down the road from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Luxury Options

Some of the higher-end hotels in Birmingham allow pets but charge more than $10. The Embassy Suites Birmingham is an all-suite hotel that also houses a Ruth's Chris Steak House and features a wet bar in every suite. The hotel also has a complimentary business center, fitness center and manager’s reception that offers drinks and appetizers. Guests can bring their pets, but they’ll pay a $35 fee per pet per day. Embassy Suites limits the weight on pets to 50 lb. but does not limit the number allowed.

Nonrefundable Deposit

Some Birmingham hotels allow pets to stay, but guests have to fork over a nonrefundable deposit. Homewood Suites in Birmingham offers amenities like a business center, a basketball court and a fitness center. Pet owners must pay a $75 deposit for cleaning, which is not returned at checkout. The deposit is in lieu of a daily fee. The Residence Inn Marriott Hoover is an all-suite hotel that features amenities like a grocery shopping service and a complimentary breakfast. Pet owners pay a $100 nonrefundable deposit at check-in.
